Are You Thinking What I’m Thinking?
“Shark Week” conjures up feelings ranging between amazement and paralyzing fear. Truly a cultural spectacle. As it has been mentioned in a previous post (The Two Scariest Words: Dun-Dun), all of mankind (and womankind) can collectively thank the legendary Steven Spielberg for permanently planting the unforgettable soundtrack and classic scenes into our psyche regarding blockbuster entertainment coupled with beach safety.
Actually, given the number of great white sharks near coastlines at popular destinations around the world, a thank you really is in order. Thank you!
One of the annual traditions with “Shark Week” is watching crews for The Discovery Channel push new boundaries, like exploring the present-day existence of Megalodon or the “Rookin'” down in Louisiana. What will be next?
I’m glad you asked.
What fascinates me is not so much what we think of sharks, but what sharks think of us. Within the technological revolution that is currently booted up for generations to come, is there a neuroscientist somewhere who is dreaming up a water-proof device that could be tagged onto a great white shark that somehow measures and sends back its brain activity?
Think about that. More importantly, imagine that.
Before you begin calling mental institutions to reserve me a room (with an ocean view please), watch the clip below and tell me this diver was not interested in a similar endeavor. It’s only unbelievable until you do it.
If we are going to explore a seemingly infinite environment, we must have an equally infinite imagination.

There were several highlights at this year’s Comic Con in San Diego. For instance, “The Big Bang Theory’s” Johnny Galecki disguised himself as a, “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” character and asked a question in front of, “The Big Bang Theory” panel on a main stage area. Once he removed his mask, the crowd erupted in cheers. Galecki then joined the panel on-stage.
Awesome!
However, there was one announcement that flew above the rest. With regard to superheroes, this paring absolutely takes the cake.
For those of us who have been following the subsequent moves of the super hit, “Man of Steel” and for those of us who love, “The Dark Knight” trilogy, Saturday morning was the day we had been waiting for…
We’ve all heard the news, but now it’s time to watch it:
What does this all mean exactly? While director Zack Snyder has said the sequel will not be an adaptation of, “The Dark Knight Returns” comic from which the quote was taken, it does offer an initial clue about the story. A few of the initial and prominent questions will nonetheless include the following:
Will we get the lighthearted jokes between Clark Kent and Lois Lane? How about some playful flirting between Superman (“that’s what they’re calling him”) and Lois Lane? Will we see more Superman rescues a la Christopher Reeve in 1978’s, “Superman?” Who will play the new Bruce Wayne/Batman? What will his personal story entail? What characters will surround Bruce Wayne/Batman? Will Superman and Batman have a common enemy/enemies? How will Metropolis and Gotham City merge?
We’ll all just have to wait and see. Unfortunately, the first teaser trailer won’t be released until well into the future. For now…

Superman is the greatest superhero in history.
This entry will focus on the latter portion of this statement because as the 2013 cinematic version of the, “man of steel” is only days away from re-entering Earth’s atmosphere and psyche, understanding where this inspirational icon has come from is critical to appreciating where he is today.
About 63 years ago, George Reeves entertained television audiences with his clean-cut image of Superman. Then, the world in 1978 saw Christopher Reeve prove to be definitively everything Clark Kent/Superman to movie audiences of all ages. A couple more actors since have added their personalities to this character and this Friday British actor Henry Cavill will be debuting his take to the public.
Below is a collection of clips from a Superman documentary, tracking the television and movie actors up to Christopher Reeve look-alike Brandon Routh in 2006s, “Superman Returns.” It’s remarkable to see how one character from a comic book published 75 years ago has changed and sustained decade after decade after decade to bring rejuvenated hope to the people of Earth.
With, “Man of Steel” about to premiere to the worldwide audiences, watch the short video and reminisce on all things Superman. All the while, ask yourself if you think this superhero is trending in the right direction.
And also watch a trailer for, “Man of Steel” again and compare and contrast what George Reeves and his television show did in the 1950s to what Warner Bros. is doing today in 2013.
