Making a Fuss for the Restivus

Seinfeld taught us everything there is to know about nothing, which turned out to be everything we love twenty years later.

As the innovative Frank Costanza would say today, on December 23rd of each year, “Happy Festivus!”

Courtesy of the aforementioned Frank Costanza, the creator of “Festivus,” the world was given the platform to air-out their grievances whilst in the presence of our loved ones and an aluminum pole.

What’s my grievance this year?

That Festivus still isn’t a federally recognized holiday.

Ask yourself: Do you have an aluminum pole set upright in the middle of your home?

You would have the chance to get one if you had today off, with plenty of time in the evening to grieve, culminating in a hilarious wrestling match.

Happy Festivus!

P.S. A donation has been made in your name to the Human Fund.

Happy Monday!

Bill Pullman’s speech as President Thomas J. Whitmore in Independence Day gave us goosebumps back in 1996.

That same speech is being used to excite us all over again nearly 20 years later. You could say that declarative message of grit, inspiration and bravery is experiencing a resurgence.

Yeah, I have chills too.

Have a Great Week!

P.S. Will Smith, what could’ve been…

Making the Right Count

Perhaps, it was just happenstance that I changed the channel to the cinematic masterpiece Titanic tonight literally five seconds before the beginning of the film?

Or maybe randomness isn’t as random (or decipherable) as we’d like to think it is.

With most movies made back in 1997 and earlier, it’s common to change channels and tune in somewhere in the middle. We’ve become so familiar with interrupting a movie in the middle and at the endings when the play on television that we can forget the opening acts that initially engaged us during our premiere experience.

The poker game with Jack Dawson and friend Fabrizio is a classic scene. It illustrates luck, savvy game play and the American way of betting it all on a dream.

And for a particular writer looking for some game-changing chance luck of his own, the aforementioned risk reveals an appealing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of titanic proportions.

The tricky part is identifying that paramount poker game when it’s not a poker game.

And for me personally, I pray my moment isn’t a literal card game.

A Fresh Return

“Throwback Thursday” got a little jazzy today.

Nostalgia has a very special place in all of our hearts and the past few years has been glorious/surreal in celebrating the 20th, 25th and 30th anniversaries of amazing films and television shows that made up a golden era of funny and witty entertainment.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is a prime example and Smith’s announcement is great news that DJ Jazzy Jeff will be known to multiple generations as “their DJ.” The positive feelings and memories towards this show and characters is great. Kids who grew up with the series are now showing their kids the reruns cleverly filled with humor, life lessons and the official dance moves to Tom Jones.

The good news for Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff is that parents today just may understand what they’re singing about.
