Standing in the Cold

When Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks join forces, good things happen (Saving Private Ryan, The Terminal, Catch Me If You Can).

Their latest collaboration, Bridge of Spies, is a Cold War thriller with a seemingly mundane premise: a trial. This trial involves spies and (as the brand new trailer below reveals) the legal and moral ramifications in this beautifully shot film rise to the highest-levels of mid-20th century drama. The soundtrack adds a pulsating element that aggressively grabs us and keeps our attention as much as Mr. Hanks’ magnetic presence.

Ladies and gentlemen, it appears that Mr. Spielberg has made yet another must-see movie.

The Real Deep Blue Sea

It seems as if Steven Spielberg’s defining summer blockbuster Jaws may have had more than just a toe dipped in the water involving the true events that inspired his film.

As people’s bravery increases simultaneously with the improved strength of metal cages designed for underwater hovering, their terrifying interactions with giant sharks reveal new discoveries about the aggressive, yet surprisingly tranquil super predators of the ocean.

Brand new footage of the largest shark ever recorded on video from a dive off the Mexican coast in 2013 was just released to the public. Her name is Deep Blue.

Deep Blue’s size is so colossal that it begs the question as to whether Spielberg and Co. built a new animatronic shark and let it loose in the waters off Guadalupe Island. This great white is suspected to be about 50 years-old and is estimated to be at least 20 feet long.

In the movie Jaws, the monster shark measured at around 25 feet.

It’s been 40 years and we still need a bigger boat.

Happy Monday!

Walking through the life and career of Abraham Lincoln at his presidential museum and home in Springfield, Illinois last Thursday was a thrill. Even with a solid understanding of his legacy, there was so much to learn and admire about this giant of American history. There was one exhibit set-up across the street that housed sets and costumes from Steven Spielberg’s 2012 movie Lincoln, starring Daniel Day-Lewis. The magic of film making combined with the defining power of President Lincoln created a great experience in addition to his impressive museum.

In the movie, there’s a particularly towering moment that captures Lincoln’s persuasive skill at getting tough things done, against all odds.

The Artistic Engineering of Class

First, the second viewing of Jurassic World in 3D was a seamless sight for audiences. Similar to Jurassic Park in 3D, this franchise and its cinematography is a perfect fit for this evolving technology.

The build-up for Jurassic World last week and its indominous weekend was validation that this summer blockbuster for the ages delivered as the best follow-up to its untouchable original. Furthermore, in a gracious display of congratulations by the team at Avengers for Jurassic World surpassing its standing as the highest grossing movie over an opening weekend, Marvel made the following picture with a personalized congratulations to Steven Spielberg, Colin Trevorrow, Chris Pratt and others.

By the hammer of a T-Rex that’s cool!

What’s nice is that this creative gesture is a bit of a tradition between box office rivals in Hollywood. Here’s what Steven Spielberg wrote to George Lucas a few decades ago in an issue of Variety magazine.
