The Vintage, Homey Style is Back

Rogue One is one week away from being available for purchase in a video store (well, a big store with a limited movie section) and it currently has the number one commercial.

The ’70s and ’80s, among many things, featured the revolutionary cinematic franchise Star Wars, the rise of storyteller Steven Spielberg and the never-to-be-forgotten VHS (Video Home System). As covered on Jimmy’s Daily Planet around this time last year, the creative team behind The Nice Guys engaged in a brilliant marketing campaign to promote its highly-entertaining buddy cop film. Based in the ’70s, The Nice Guys had a few trailers. All well done. But one of those trailers rose above the rest by having the gritty, quintessential and unique film quality of a movie literally released in (you guessed it) the ’70s.

And YouTube user Damien Kazan channeled the same creative spirit and took it to the next nostalgic level for a crazy awesome commercial marketing…a VHS copy of Rogue One.

If only the distribution team behind Rogue One could have pulled off a special edition VHS version of this critically-acclaimed Star Wars Story for purchase. Regardless, this VHS commercial is undeniably rad.

This fan-made Rogue One commercial is outstanding.

4K TV’s certainly have no issue capturing the crown as the resolution king in family rooms around the world today, but it may be damn near impossible for 4K (and 8K, etc.) to ever capture the nostalgic movie magic from the days of the VHS.

1980s-something for the win.

O Captain! My Captain Under – Wait, What?

There are some blog posts that require very little introduction. Ladies and gentlemen, the following video requires only two words:

Captain Underpants.

That any serious movie studio would make such a film with that title and…

how soon can I purchase my tickets?

When a title is enough to make you laugh-out-loud (or “lol” for the younger readers), that’s a great first sign for any comedic story.

Happy Monday

Something wonderful happened over the weekend, specifically this past Saturday.

If you are unfamiliar with the name Gal Gadot, don’t worry, because you will be well acquainted with her name and her otherworldly skills soon enough (in a matter of paragraphs). If you are familiar with the female heroine Wonder Woman, then this blog post will be a terrific way to start your week.

For the first time ever, Wonder Woman will be given the silver screen treatment on June 2nd of this year. About time, right? Thus far, director Patty Jenkins (a wonder woman herself), Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Comics have released a couple brilliant posters and a teaser trailer for this landmark film for the legendary female superhero. But this past Saturday, Wonder Woman fans were thrilled when the “origin” trailer was released online and through social media.

In a single word: Yes.

Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) is a name people (most especially countless girls and women) won’t forget.

Have a Better Week Than Last Week.

It’s the Galaxy That’s Just Far Away

Well, that reggae band does sound pretty cool…

It’s no secret that the movie industry is constantly reforming the way it interacts with audiences to introduce and persuade people to see particular films. For many moviegoers, however, the content of the film (the story, actors and actresses, director, writer, etc.) is enough to spark interest. Still, this reality doesn’t prevent movie studios (large and small) from adapting to the modern online, social media and viral marketing phenomenon. This includes teaser trailers, movie poster reveals, multiple subsequent trailers (perhaps too many?) and rare insights (clips and cast interviews) for an upcoming movie at special events, like Comic-Con.

And movie fans are typically very thankful for these efforts, especially when done with added degrees of creativity.

Enter Jimmy Kimmel, Marvel Studios and Chris from Lake Stevens, WA for a brand new look at a small budget independent film.

Above all else, there’s one certainty about movies from Marvel Studios:

They like to have fun…and they’re pretty good at this “entertainment” thing.

P.S. Was the decision to release Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 the day after “May the 4th Be With You” a not-so-subtle jab at the Star Wars movie universe? Well, Marvel Studios certainly wouldn’t dare challenge Star Wars on a theatrical release date in December, so…
