Lay Your Instruments Down

British alternative rockers Wolf Gang sadly announced their days as a rising band are over.

They created several musical hits (“The King and All of His Men,” “Black River,” “Lions in Cages,” “Back to Back,” “Lay Your Love Down”) with savvy lyrics and a sound that was just beginning to be explored and developed. The seemingly successful collaboration of Max McElligott, Lasse Petersen, Gavin Slater, James Wood and Beau Holland will now see a future of individually roaming wolves.  The wolf pack is no more.

Somewhere, Zach Galifianakis Alan is very upset.

I have great memories of seeing them live in the intimate Basement setting in Columbus, Ohio last September. Wolf Gang got the place rocking right out of the gate with “Black River” and seemed destined as the next great export from across the pond. Even though their journey has ended, in honor of “Throwback Thursday,” let’s remember Wolf Gang for what they were: talented.

(About four months before their return visit in September) I present Wolf Gang performing “Black River” in The Basement.

Despite their separation, it will be exciting to see what each member does next. However, why did they break-up?

Maybe the band actually evolved into a king and all of his men

Happy Throwback Thursday!

Watching my 8-year old nephew read his favorite book series with excitement and dedication (anywhere and everywhere) is a wonderful sight. The fact that he willingly takes long breaks from the intoxicating glow and varied selection of high-definition electronics at his disposal is a genuine flashback to the days when my friends and I chose books over Nintendo (for at least a couple weeks).

The bookstore > Media Play (there’s a blast from the past!)

The greatest book series when I was his age was Goosebumps by scare master R.L. Stine. He was the best at sparking imaginations to run wild in suspense and mystery. His creative elasticity to write so many books is impressive and his legacy endures to this day.

Need proof?

We all know a book/book series isn’t truly worthy until Hollywood projects it on the big screen. From books to TV to the silver screen, R.L. Stine’s next chapter will be coming to a theater near you, with Jack Black portraying the famous author.

Goosebumps comes alive this October.

Welcome to Stine’s House.

An Insanely Great Throwback Thursday

Saying “hello” has rarely been so profound.

In the spirit of “Throwback Thursday” and the Steve Jobs trailer that debuted yesterday, today’s blog post will take you back to the real Steve Jobs presenting the first Macintosh computer in 1984 to an audience in awe of a personal machine they and the world had never seen live before.

There are events in life when you instantly know everything’s about to change forever.

This was one of those moments.

Happy Throwback Thursday!

This is my southernmost Throwback Thursday.

Back on December 31, 2001, my family and I boarded an airplane. You’re probably thinking that we grabbed the shortest of all straws in booking airfare. Surprisingly, you’d be wrong. The special event is called, “Antarctica Flights” by Croydon Travel. They fill a commercial airliner with a couple hundred people, delicious food (not airplane food) and golden champagne for views that are quite nearly out-of-this-world.

As you’ll see in the video below, which is the aforementioned flight just many years later, the sights are breathtaking. We could see the wind blowing on the ice from side-to-side, as well as the penguins waddling around. And the birds eye view gave a grandiose impression of the most difficult continent to visit. This was an unforgettable adventure to a place believed to be reserved for only those very few daring explorers and scientists.

Welcome to the southernmost flight on Earth.

Being aboard this flight across Antarctica, in the company of the first people to usher in the new year, is a remarkably surreal experience.

It’s really special icing on that new year’s cake.
