There’s a Nice Way to Make a Movie Trailer, Karen
Is there a better “Flashback Friday” than the ’70s retro trailer for the 2016 buddy cop movie The Nice Guys?
I don’t think so.
The marketing campaign for The Nice Guys a couple years back was as fantastic and fun as the film being promoted. And it was covered extensively by Jimmy’s Daily Planet. The film’s trailers (retro, animated, traditional) and interviews with Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling (individual and joint) were simply incredible. The strategy for making and promoting this entertaining flashback to ’70s-style cinema in the form of a hilariously self-aware and brutally clever buddy-cop bromance didn’t receive the accolades it should have at the moment.
Just this writer’s opinion.
The good news is, in the YouTube era, we can reminisce with relative ease.
And that’s nice, guys.
P.S. Bonus points to anyone who caught the admittedly subtle movie-line reference in this blog post’s title to a line from a recently acclaimed film by one of the aforementioned actors.
Disney’s Latest 3-Episode Renewal
Yes, yes and yes!
FYI- There’s a very specific and awesome reason why the word “yes” is written three times.
The good news is that The Last Jedi looks visually stunning with a bold, daring story. The better news is that we are only a little more than a month away from the highly-anticipated theatrical release of The Last Jedi, written and directed by the aforementioned Rian Johnson.
A quick refresher on Rian Johnson’s work on Star Wars: Episode VIII.
Looks like beloved Spielberg producer and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy red read between the lines with Rian Johnson and The Last Jedi. Now even more than before, the fate of Episode VIII needs to be great.
And hopefully with less Dr. Seuss-style rhyming.
Just Normal Things on Friday the 13th
Strange things happen on Friday the 13th. Stranger things happen on Friday the 13th when Netflix is involved.
Case in point:
10 new episodes of ’80s-inspired awesomeness formally known as season 2 of the hit Netflix original series Stranger Things arrive on Friday, October 27th.
PSA: Stock up on Eggo’s frozen waffles. You’ll probably get hungry during a 10-hour Stranger Things binge…
A Record of Human History: The Hey-Side
For around a year, I’ve been waiting for a particular package to arrive. Patiently…waiting. No, it wasn’t late. This time, the package just took a while, and for legitimate reasons. The contents of which were going to be amazing and, honestly, out of this world when opened.
Well, at least a spectacular replica of something that was literally sent out of this world 40 years ago.
And this package arrived today!
As expected, the book, the albums and the disc sleeves are spectacularly designed and produced. It’s surreal to receive such a cool piece of history in the mail, courtesy of a Kickstarter campaign.
The fundraising and reward-based company Kickstarter has been good to a lot of innovators, dreamers and customers (like me) over the past several years. Thanks to Kickstarter, I’ve ridden a real-life hoverboard (no wheels, but an actual hoverboard that hovered above the ground in Silicon Valley), possess a limited edition board game inspired by Christopher Nolan’s epic film Inception (that came inside a silver briefcase) and can now play NASA’s famed Golden Records on a turntable and/or digitally.
Simply incredible.
If the Golden Record was re-recorded with a few new songs, images and earthly sounds today, one specific thing comes to mind above all the worthy contenders…
the B-movie masterpiece Independence Day.
Just as a nice reminder, in case the aliens ever got any ideas.
