The Dark Apple

“Stay hungry. Stay foolish.”

(emphasis on the latter here)

Rumor is that acclaimed actor Christian Bale is the leading candidate for portraying the late Steve Jobs in the major motion picture based on Walter Isaacson’s biography of the technology icon, with a screenplay penned by Aaron Sorkin. Fans of Bale, especially for his role as Batman in Christopher Nolan’s epic Dark Knight trilogy, cannot help but dream about the prospects of the actor bringing the same kind of intelligent, conflicted and controversial edge to the Apple co-founder (who was also intelligent, conflicted and controversial) as he did with Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego.

Every once in a while, Conan O’Brien and his team does something entertaining. The video clip below is one of those moments:

Steve Jobs’ black turtlenecks apparently had more armor than I realized…

Space & Time

“We’ll find a way…we always have”

Dedication to a particular craft is essential to those who aspire to making something that transcends the ordinary and moves us into a space in the extraordinary. Movie director Christopher Nolan continues to build his resume of critically acclaimed movies that excel in acting, production, writing, creativity, intelligence and a gravitas most films fail to reach. One explanation is that Nolan is an independent filmmaker who succeeds in making blockbuster hits with the acute skills of an independent filmmaker, but with crazy blockbuster budgets and expectations.

True story.

Another hypothesis is that because he dedicates himself to one movie at a time, it translates into an investment that proves to elevate his films above the rest. Fans know that when a Christopher Nolan movie is released that it will be something grand in scale, thought-provoking and visually stunning with a pulsating soundtrack courtesy of his longtime musical collaborator Hans Zimmer.

Another teaser trailer has been released for Interstellar and it’s worthwhile to see. There’s one detail in particular that’s revealed that will undoubtedly be a string that will pull at our hearts throughout this space epic. It has to do with a conversion of time.

Christopher Nolan’s singular cinematic commitment is truly reaching for the stars in Interstellar.

Will you be so tenacious come early November?

Midnight in France

When living and breathing in the midst of the impossible transcends into a reality of playful imagination and limitless possibilities, then there’s not only a story there, but a delightful tale exposing the ambiguity and magical nature of love and life.

Throw in France nearly a century ago (a “golden age” to some) and a short guy with thick, black glasses from the Bronx and we can all take pleasure in traveling back to a time and place that will reveal something profound about ourselves today. Woody Allen is an iconic writer and director, while simultaneously defined as a controversial figure. However, taking the latter aside for a moment, it should be noted how he expanded his audience with his inspired 2011 hit Midnight in Paris. It seems as though Mr. Allen discovered a way to feature his usual band of intellectually obnoxious characters, but this time with a sense of humor that is well contrasted with a “normal,” romantic protagonist.

Ironically, the protagonist in Midnight in Paris (played by the free spirit Owen Wilson) appeared to be a younger, wide-eyed version of Woody himself.

Nonetheless, that was then and this is now.

Magic in the Moonlight comes to theaters (wait, don’t tell me…) on July 25th.

From Owen Wilson to Colin Firth.

Wait, forget that. This movie stars the beautiful, wonderfully amusing Emma Stone.

Okay, no need to explain the title.

Happy Monday!

It’s Monday, which means the occasional “breaking news” announcement that can redefine life as we know it. In today’s case, it’s more of something being redefined for the modern era.

“Who ya gonna call?”

That’s right, this is happening…

Happy Monday and Happy Future Labor Day Weekend 2014!
