From Burnt to Burns

Two years meets the time required to be considered a flashback, right?

Regardless of the rules of the social media protocol, it does for today’s installation of Flashback Friday.

A favorite blooper interview (not a blooper reel, but a full-fledged blooper interview) of Jimmy’s Daily Planet is from a couple years ago. Actors Sienna Miller, Daniel Brühl, and Bradley Cooper are promoting their 2015 film Burnt with Willie Geist of NBC’s TODAY Show. While the movie is beautifully (and deliciously) shot with an intriguing story, there are occasional pops of cringe-worthy soundtrack selections and dialogue cooked from over-priced self-immortalization. And this is the fault of the writing and producing, not the acting. Still, despite these flaws unmistakenly burned around the edges and partly into the main story, there’s a great, entertaining movie in Burnt that leaves us all striving to one day afford to eat at the fictional Adam Jones at the Langham. 

Luckily, we can experience the real chemistry (and improvisational comedic chops) of actors Sienna Miller, Daniel Brühl, and Bradley Cooper.

If there’s a funnier food dish than Wienerschnitzel said in perfect German, please let me know.

Laughing is the Best…It’s Just the Best

Sienna Miller, Daniel Brühl and Bradley Cooper star in the newly released film, Burnt. Telling the story of trying to run the best restaurant in the world through the lens of a cook struggling to regain his place atop the culinary world, Burnt looks like a fun ride into one of Hollywood’s responses to the foodie craze that has run wild in America the past several years.

An excellent primary cast and picturesque settings does not guarantee a hit, but the chemistry demonstrated above reveals this movie may have some degree of that “it” factor.

Anybody else craving schnitzel?

Now that I have your full attention, the increasingly dynamic actor has literally learned new tricks for his most recent film: Burnt.

The heat of a world-class kitchen and its painful wounds with and without knives and boiling water has produced challenges for his character that requires laser-focus, street smarts and determination as strong and ambitious as the Eiffel Tower. Mr. Cooper, once again sharing the silver screen with the entertainingly beautiful Sienna Miller (American Sniper) and a supporting cast of wonderful up-and-comers (Alicia Vikander, Daniel Brühl), is the movie industry’s response to the latest top-shelf food craze in America (Food Network, Top Chef, celebrity chefs and their many shows, cooking competitions, etc.). An added bonus is the film takes place in Paris, which instantly adds an alluring quality to the story.

As Nelly would say, “It’s gettin’ hot in here…”

Like any delicious dish, the most minute details make all the difference between something sizzling and memorable and something lukewarm and forgettable.

How will Burnt’s fantastic cast mix together?

We’ll find out when the movie is served October 23rd.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Today, we will all gather around the dinner table of that brave soul who willingly volunteered to host Thanksgiving with our family and friends to give thanks for the many blessings in our lives. Feasts will overwhelm kitchens with each family’s special touch. This may pertain to cranberry sauce that is prepared beyond just shimmying it out of the can, potatoes with or without lumps or that special dessert from a family recipe with that quintessential whipped cream dollop.

Regardless of the shouting, screaming and crying (and don’t forget about the children), the varying successes and failures throughout today will perfectly define Thanksgiving for us all. But, when all the food is eaten, the dishes cleared (not yet cleaned, but cleared) and people’s adrenaline levels have subsided, then that special bonding moment can begin with either a visit to the movie theater or an in-home entertainment presentation.

From my family to yours, here’s a little insight (or appetizer if you will) to what really brings joy to our world (drum beat please!).
