It’s Oscar Season…La La La

Will La La Land be Titanic at the Academy Awards way back in 1998?

Or Titanic the ship in reality…

The musical sensation La La Land has tied James Camerson’s cinematic epic Titanic (and All About Eve) with 14 Oscar nominations. Released at the end of 2016, the film starring the much-awaited Crazy, Stupid, Love reunion between Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone is the it movie in Hollywood right now. Critics love the movie and, most importantly, fans love this movie. La La Land looks amazing.

Will the romantic musical dominate the 89th Academy Awards?

We’ll find out Sunday, February 26, 2017.

Until then, let’s watch star Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling (Actor in a Leading Role) discuss his experience making La La Land as Sebastian during a recent interview.

Hollywood is defined as a city of stars.

But the question is which stars will forever shine a little brighter than the rest on the night of February 26th?

These Musical Chairs Are a Force Unlike Any Other

Continuing yesterday’s blog post, let’s explore a bit of the force and its enduring power…

John Williams.

Enough said, I know. Mr. Williams is a masterful music composer who is responsible for some of the most iconic and treasured movie scores in history. Among them, the theme from Jaws (1975), all the Star Wars films (starting in 1977), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Superman (1978), all the Indiana Jones films (starting in 1981), E.T. (1982), Home Alone (1990), Schindler’s List (1993), Jurassic Park (1993) and so on.

Forgive me for not listing all his movie soundtracks, but it’s a very long list.

Returning to the Star Wars franchise was a thrill for Mr. Williams, as he explains in the video below. Inspired by the chance viewing of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope on the first day of 2017, any reason to listen to and learn from a genius is a good one. And this is one of those occasions. For any fan of Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (or of brilliant music in general), please enjoy a special behind-the-scenes look into the process for writing and imagining the soundtrack for the blockbuster smash hit The Force Awakens.

If that interview makes you ponder life in a slightly unorthodox, yet better way, then the force may not be that far off for you…

It’s a Wonderful…Friendship

Christmas and It’s a Wonderful Life go together like America and apple pie. Now add in a friendly bond that spans 7-decades and your understanding of the holiday spirit may very well be redefined in a great way.

It’s a Wonderful Life has its ideal combination of rough moments and endearing moments, which is a magical formula in Hollywood and in real life. Maybe this is why the black and white film is so beloved seventy years after its theatrical release in the era of Blu-ray? This film, a favorite among many for countless different reasons, proves that new isn’t always better and that we must remember that the past is not always so distant.

That sentiment is certainly the case with the children from It’s a Wonderful Life. A recent sit-down on the Today Show illustrates and confirms one of our hopes with any movie: That the cast really did get along and that there was/is a special bond between the actors and actresses.

Listen carefully for any bells ringing…

Merry Christmas!

Hi, I’m Jimmy. Even if Your Name was Thursday, I’d Never Throw You Back

Get ready for the throwback you never knew you needed.

Actors Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne and Bryan Cranston were recent guests on The Graham Norton Show. It was hilariously revealed that Mr. Cranston, in another life, was a deftly skilled interviewer…for a video dating company…from the ’70s and possibly into the ’80s.

In the always entertaining spirit of “Throwback Thursday,” please check out this dynamite interview about a nostalgic dating technique that transformed into a laugh-out-loud throwback for the ages.

Important:

  • Bryan Cranston was in a sitcom called Malcolm in the Middle
  • Eddie Redmayne is in a new movie called Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
  • Benedict Cumberbatch is in a new movie called Doctor Strange

I want the intro/theme music from Great Expectations as my ringtone.
