Happy Monday

As with most sports, the athletic activity is merely the vehicle for the pursuit of something much, much larger.

And there are few individual rivalries in sports, at least in recent memory, that compare to the boundless intensity of tennis greats John McEnroe and Björn Borg. Team sports is another story, but regarding two men who competed against each other in high-stakes competitions, the tension between these legends was, well, legendary.

Quick question: Have you ever wished there was a modern day movie about this rivalry? Good news, you’re in luck.

Only “coming soon”? No exact date? You can’t be serious!

Just kidding.

I don’t subscribe to Mr. McEnroe‘s unbridled expressive tendencies, but the hope is a release date will be revealed soon. It will be fascinating to discover what this rivalry was really about

Happy Monday

First Star Wars in 2015 and now Indiana Jones in 2020.

Yes, Harrison Ford is returning to play a few of his most iconic (and beloved) cinematic characters. Mr. Ford was awesome as Han Solo in The Force Awakens and there’s no reason to suspect he will let fans down as Professor Jones in 2020 with Steven Spielberg at his side.

Well, as long as George Lucas doesn’t get the final call on the script (cough cough Kingdom of the Crystal Skull).

However, 2020 is still a long way off into the future. If only there was another iconic character Mr. Ford could revive in the meantime…

The original Blade Runner from 1982, a model for many subsequent science-fiction films, seems to have a worthy successor in Blade Runner 2049 based solely on the first full-length trailer released today.

History’s Clock Never Stops Ticking

The present and the future becomes the past in a hurry.

Having said that, Christopher Nolan’s forthcoming World War II epic Dunkirk about the past during the mid-1940s is a heroic present for the 21st-century future.

400,00 men. 933 ships. 9 days.

The harrowing events portrayed in the film Dunkirk strive to capture the legitimately incomprehensible odds Allied soldiers faced against the merciless German army during World War II on the beaches of France. Incredibly, the battlefields of World War II may never be seen again in the context of the three figures listed above. Wars, throughout time, have contained many threads of commonality with innovative changes and strategies according to the century and respective technological advancements. Still, the magnitude of the Battle of Dunkirk is still staggering.

And it’s that reality of history, the scale of the Battle of Dunkirk, that sparks curious intrigue for Mr. Nolan’s first filmmaking venture into an event during a historic war that defined the 20th-century. Beyond Dunkirk being the first war film by Mr. Nolan, which is an exciting moment as a directorial benchmark and cinematic reference point, one of the storytelling gifts the aforementioned director gives movie fans is the skill to scale a moviegoing experience onto the largest IMAX screen while simultaneously grounding the story and characters in deeply intimate struggles (internal and external) with powerful acts of heroism, defeat, and mystery.

And mind-bending surprises in the finale.

Or, in another word, prestige.

The Last Jedi (Trailer) Has Awakened

The first teaser trailer for Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi is here.

What’s your first reaction?

My reaction can be summarized with three words hyphenated in perfect harmony:

Crazy-awesome-amazing.

The Jedi has to end? Who is Supreme Leader Snoke? Is “Jedi” in the title intended to be singular or plural? Who is Rey related to? Is this Luke Skywalker’s final Star Wars adventure?

While much of the film’s story and crucial details are well under wrap (thankfully), fans have been given a spectacular glimpse into the (potentially) masterful work by director Rian Johnson. The intensity level for The Last Jedi will continue to rise to fever pitch and beyond with 8 months still to go until its theatrical release that will likely make a few more bucks than that Shia LaBeouf’s film Man Down one week ago (sold one ticket in England).

Thank you, 40 Years of Star Wars Celebration. This wonderful event brought together most of the primary cast of the original trilogy, its famed creator George Lucas, a sensational first look at The Last Jedi and a sweet, emotional video tribute to Carrie Fisher.

We’ll always remember Carrie Fisher as a princess.

Romantics say that time makes the heart grow fonder, whereas Star Wars fans say that teasingly mesmerizing questions with answers to be discovered on a definitive cinematic release date makes the heart grow at a rate of 12 parsecs.
