Dr. Ian Malcom’s clever book placements in Jurassic World were no coincidence.

The actor, who co-starred in 1993’s Jurassic Park and 1997’s The Lost World: Jurassic Park, will appear in Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s next Jurassic World film.

Jeff Goldblum’s return sparks a few thoughts:

  • Given the late casting, was Jeff Golblum supposed to be in the Jurassic World sequel from the inception of this new trilogy’s story development? Or was this late casting news intended to keep plot details as secret as possible, on a literal need-to-know basis for the public?
  • The storytelling gate has been opened, if only slightly, to begin to gradually weave the original cast back to the Jurassic universe before a dramatic Act III entrance in the third film of this trilogy.
  • The story and character arc for Dr. Ian Malcolm must be quite good to entice Jeff Goldblum to return 20 years later.

Without context or plot details (or seeing the film, quite frankly), it’s difficult to make a final, definitive judgement on this casting move. Having said that, welcoming Jeff Goldblum to the Jurassic World sequel is very exciting. From 10,000 feet, this decision seems like a great bridge not only from the original film (and The Lost World) to this new sequel, but also in bringing back the tone and wit of Jurassic Park that was noticeably absent in Jurassic World.

Otherwise, this forthcoming sequel may feel a bit chaotic…aside from all of the dinosaurs.

P.S. I wonder what Ellie Sattler’s book title would be?

There’s No Independence Day After Earth

Now this is what I call a close encounter…of the sequel kind.

The follow-up to Independence Day was announced a few months back, but during a recent forum in the secret alien hotbed of Albuquerque, New Mexico with the stars (including Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman) and director Roland Emmerich, the most pressing question was discussed:

Why didn’t Captain Steven Hiller Will Smith return?

Emmerich shed some light on this issue.

In the very beginning, I wanted to work with him and he was excited to be in it but then after a while he was tired of sequels, and he did another science fiction film, which was his father-son story, so he opted out.”

Keep in mind that the science-fiction film with the literal father-son story was a movie called After Earth, which was heavily panned and was a box office flop. Still, an Independence Day sequel would have revived a favored father-son relationship, while being just one of many character plot lines. The scale of this science-fiction saga stretches far and wide, both with its story and characters. It would not have been “the Will Smith movie,” yet he is a critical part of this newly created franchise. Plus, the 1996 alien summer blockbuster is still loved by fans and Will Smith is a major reason for that.

Smith’s excuse, therefore, is weak and unacceptable. He is one of the few actors in Hollywood that earns a fresh look from the audience with each new project. Arriving in theaters next year, it’s probably safe to say that Smith will regret passing on this movie. It’s essentially impossible to bring something back from yesteryear and for it to be as good as the original. Except, with this movie and its original director, all of its big name stars returning and the initial plot (it’s 20 years later and David Levinson is/has been leading a global initiative to prepare for any future alien attacks), the potential is high for a fun return to some exciting 1996 cinematic nostalgia.

As a bonus for fans, the official title was revealed:

Independence Day: Resurgence.

The aliens will try to blow up Jurassic World’s box office records next summer starting June 24th.

A Model…Sequel

It’s happening!

Zoolander 2 (title may still be pending), the sequel to the 2001 cult classic, was officially announced today as Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson surprisingly strutted down the Valentino fashion runway at the conclusion of the Paris show as their famous model characters Derek and Hansel.

This sequel buzz is so hot right now.

Dressed in perfectly ridiculous outfits (including silk pajamas and what appears to be a silk suit), Stiller and Wilson caused camera phones to flash from every direction and hearts to race for all the right reasons. Perhaps the best comedic buddy duo since Harry and Lloyd, these male models look identical to their 2001-selves with a blue steel facial turn that will take your breath away.

The highly-anticipated sequel will be released on February 12, 2016. The story is going to be set and filmed in Europe, which wonderfully lends itself to outrageous situations and stereotypical realities of the international fashion world for the dim-witted, yet incredibly entertaining and really, really, really ridiculously good looking best friends.

Cool movie announcement Hansel and Derek.
