The Club Should Have Recruited a 14th Member
Fortunately, the superstitious occurrence known as “Friday the 13th” has nothing to do with preventing people from reading awesome blogs.
And that’s a good thing because, courtesy of the YouTube channel Life Noggin, we’re going to get a fresh perspective for attempting to interpret the most frightful of days connected to an unlucky number. There are many superstitions attached to “Friday the 13th,” which include black cats, mirrors breaking and the dreaded number 66 – I’ll spare us all by not typing that last number that falls between 5 and 7.
Time to look at this day with some fascinating historical perspective.
The worst part about today was that there was a bag filled with one million dollars on the ground, but I would’ve had to walk under a ladder to grab the cool million.
Oh well, hopefully the money will still be there tomorrow on Saturday the 14th.
Fun Fact: The 13 Club that was founded in New York with members who dared to walk under ladders and break mirrors (as seen in the video). This group eventually became known as the New York Mets.
(Not true, but how perfect would that have been!)
Christopher Nolan’s Epic (Cinematic) War Takes Shape
The first full trailer for THE movie of this summer has arrived…
In a word: Dunkirk.
Director and screenwriter Christopher Nolan and BFF soundtrack composer Hans Zimmer appear ready to deliver yet another cinematic epic. The ticking clock at the beginning of the trailer and the ominous heartbeat at the end of the trailer signals an unrelentingly gritty war movie with just the slightest bit of hope barely visible in a living hell that will require the ultimate sacrifice, courage and cleverness to merely survive through the greatest obstacles of the body and the mind.
Welcome to Christopher Nolan’s first war movie: Stunning visuals rooted in realism, practical effects galore, brilliant writing with twists-and-turns and a supreme cast with the underrated wild card (cough cough Harry Styles). And being a film by Mr. Nolan, rest assured that there will a mind-bending aspect attached. How or what will it be?
As the cinema fan Christopher Nolan himself would say, “That’s why we go to the movies…to experience a film that connects with us on a deeply curious and enlightening level.”
And experience Dunkirk I will.
The Weight of History
If Usain Bolt (9.58 seconds) or Andre De Grasse (9.91 seconds) ran the 100m at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany, how would they’ve fared against the legendary Jesse Owens (10.3 seconds)? Too bad we’ll never know.
Well, as Marty McFly would say, “This is heavy, Doc.”
The time traveling dash took place shortly prior to this year’s Olympics.
The natural inclination for sports commentators and analysts is to hype current athletes and achievements with superlatives. At times, the compliments fly at a slightly exaggerated rate. How quickly we forget the results of the past…or even just the last year. Still, there are athletic performances (individual and team) that warrant lightning-in-a-bottle fanfare. But it’s important to introduce perspective whenever possible. The fact is that Usain Bolt is a sprinter we may never see again in our lifetime. If you were to design the perfect sprinter, that final concept would look a hell of a lot like the 6’5″ Jamaican.
Witnessing Usain Bolt sprint today is the closest feat of running dominance and wow factor fans can experience that compares to the “Buckeye Bullet” people saw take flight 80 years ago.
Mr. Bolt’s achievements are undeniably laudable. However, as the phrase, “The greatest of all-time” is being cemented with his legacy, the video above shouldn’t necessarily deny that illustrious label. Instead, the struggle and significantly slower time produced by the 2016 Olympic 100m bronze medalist Andre De Grasse (9.91 seconds) should provide historical perspective and weight to the conditions, resources and technological advances made between 1936 Germany and 2016 Rio.
Usain Bolt is a once-in-a-lifetime sprinting legend and one of the fastest runners ever.
That’s an accurate statement at any point in track & field history.
DUNKIRK Looks & Sounds EPIC
The very first trailer announcement for Christopher Nolan’s next cinematic project Dunkirk just landed on our shores.
Watch and get chills of excitement.
Watch again and get more chills.
Using the same marketing playbook as his 2014 science-fiction epic Interstellar, Mr. Nolan, Syncopy and Warner Bros. are offering the first theatrical glimpse about a year out from the release date (July 21, 2017). Given the success and ground-breaking nature of previous films from Christopher Nolan, his World War II story about the Dunkirk evacuation will have relentless buzz and anticipation. Nolan Fans, like myself, have been excited for this movie ever since it was revealed Chris and his brother Jonathan were spotted scouting shooting locations in the French commune. It’s fair to presume that attention for this film will not only last, but build with excitement during the next yearlong time frame.
And yes, I have the exact same question as you: Can I buy my ticket today?
