With Kevin, Your Home is Never Alone

With Christmas less than a week away, that means we need get ourselves into the right head space for what this holiday represents, along with making certain that we’re respecting each others’ personal space.

What do I mean?

Christmas-themed movies are one of the great traditions of my family and likely yours. Celebrating Christmas at Church on Christmas Eve (at home or abroad) is always a wonderfully powerful experience, followed by Christmas morning brought to you by wrapping-paper-gone-wild. Growing up, we all have our favorite movies we watch at Christmas time. Rest assured, many of these will be featured in the coming days.

Speaking of which, let’s kick things off with a beloved favorite of mine (and hopefully of yours as well). Home Alone 2: Lost in New York is a classic and the following is a classic scene to bring back all those fantastic nostalgic memories of Kevin McCallister pulling unforgettable pranks with help from his trusty “Talkboy.”

That scene always slaps me silly with laugh-out-loud laughter.

Fantastic Mouthwash and Where to Find It

Is packing a suitcase for the airport a grand metaphor for life’s journey?

Perhaps.

However, what we all know for certain about packing for a flight is that it takes time, planning and readjustment after readjustment. Why isn’t my suitcase large enough? How can I fit these shoes in? Why do I pack that shirt because I never end up wearing it? The most stressful part of this activity, though, is abiding by the strict guidelines as determined by the TSA. In case you’ve forgotten, their attention to detail is measured not in pounds, but in ounces.

Maybe these restrictions on liquids and soaps is why there are so many CVS and Duane Reade stores in cities with the busiest airports? Guaranteed foot traffic after countless flights for tourists and visitors.

As demonstrated in the video below, packing a suitcase for the airport can be a fantastic, beast of a challenge.

Remember: Free mouthwash at the hotel!

J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is playing in a theater near you.

A Big, Tasty Thanksgiving

Giving thanks is a bit more complicated than simply saying, well, “thanks.”

With a little more than a week until we gather with friends and family to carve a turkey and celebrate Thanksgiving, it’s important to reflect on what we’re thankful for this holiday season. So many things happen to us during the course of one year that we need to make sure we don’t neglect to speak to these forces for good that made us a better person. How did we help one another in a time of need? We should tell people what they truly mean to us on a deeply personal level.

OR, you could do a Thanksgiving toast Barry Goldberg/Big Tasty-style.

If I replace his ninja sword with my lightsaber…

The Next Mannequin Challenge

Let’s face it: Nothing’s ever going to stop, well, “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” by Starship.

Yesterday’s blog (Stay Calm and Don’t Carry On) spotlighted the latest craze that’s been sweeping the nation: “The Mannequin Challenge.” And, as was mentioned in the aforementioned blog post, the true inspiration for this 2016 cultural phenomenon is the 1987 movie Mannequin.

The song, “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now,” became synonymous with the classic ’80s film. You cannot think about one without the other. Incredible. This package deal of warm, fun memories from yesteryear continues to prove its worth far beyond its post-1987 future. Especially following a contentious presidential election, the American people are in need of the eternal reminder that everything will be okay. This is true regardless of who you voted for or who you wanted to win last night. One of the greatest pillars of the amazing American experiment is to relentlessly strive for “a more perfect union.” Not perfect, but more perfect. It’s a never-ending journey and pursuit.

America can be like bickering siblings going through very difficult times. Tensions run high and nobody wants to talk or start the conversation towards reconciliation. That’s when the goofy brother takes center stage to bring at least a couple minutes of some much needed levity.

I challenge everyone to take a few minutes out of their day to dance to “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” with somebody or a group of people and record the experience. I think we all need this for a variety of reasons.

Now isn’t the time to just stand still.
