Chapel Thrill

For those who wonder why so many soccer players celebrate by pointing their fingers towards Heaven…

Soccer (or football) is known as the beautiful game. As a lifelong player and fan, I can and will attest to this description with the power of a thousand suns.

Like many sports, our personal favorite(s) often reveal a philosophical belief in how we go about life on a daily basis. The specific strategy, urgency, patience, necessities, rewards, setbacks, effort and so forth of any sport can typically be closely translated into how we view our work, jobs and the complexities of our personal lives.

The following segment from a 60 Minutes interview with FC Barcelona star Gerard Piqué from 2013 struck something inside me as a viewer, a soccer player/fan and a Christian. During the time of this interview, FC Barcelona was regarded as the best soccer club in the world. With all the star power in its starting eleven and the fanfare surrounding this team in Catalonia, take a look at what the designers of the Camp Nou believed was a must-have in the walkway from the locker room to the world famous pitch.

Despite not being a Barça fan, the chapel in Camp Nou showcases (in its uniquely intimate, off-to-the-side kind of way) the link many soccer players have when it comes to their belief in God as it pertains to the beautiful game.

That’s living and embracing the beautiful game on and off the pitch.

RIP Mary Tyler Moore

Actress Mary Tyler Moore has died at the age of 80.

Mary Tyler Moore was a television icon not only for her influence in the evolving sitcom format, but also as a leading actress. There are few words that can be expressed right now. However, the following video clip of the final curtain call for The Mary Tyler Moore Show that aired on March 19, 1977 seems like a fitting goodbye in this grim moment.

RIP Mary Tyler Moore.

It’s Oscar Season…La La La

Will La La Land be Titanic at the Academy Awards way back in 1998?

Or Titanic the ship in reality…

The musical sensation La La Land has tied James Camerson’s cinematic epic Titanic (and All About Eve) with 14 Oscar nominations. Released at the end of 2016, the film starring the much-awaited Crazy, Stupid, Love reunion between Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone is the it movie in Hollywood right now. Critics love the movie and, most importantly, fans love this movie. La La Land looks amazing.

Will the romantic musical dominate the 89th Academy Awards?

We’ll find out Sunday, February 26, 2017.

Until then, let’s watch star Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling (Actor in a Leading Role) discuss his experience making La La Land as Sebastian during a recent interview.

Hollywood is defined as a city of stars.

But the question is which stars will forever shine a little brighter than the rest on the night of February 26th?

Happy Monday

Did you think a trailer was the opening act for marketing a new movie in the 21st century?

Think again.

And then think about what this title means for the next epic chapter in the Star Wars cinematic universe.

Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi was written and directed by Rian Johnson (Looper, The Brothers Bloom, Brick) and the 43-year-old has set the bar at a next-level height for his December 15, 2017 release date. The title immediately brings to mind a battle of good vs. evil not seen since Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader’s iconic fight in The Empire Strikes Back back in 1980. Without diving too deep into the reaction Mr. Johnson and Co. expect, I caution you to take a step back and consider that the real hook in this title is visible, yet disguised.

In other words, I suspect “The Last Jedi” is (stay with me here) a Jedi mind trick in and of itself.

What kind of Jedi mind trick? I don’t know.

But extra curious of a mind-blowing, bonus twist I am.

Have a Better Week Than Last Week.

P.S. Remember that Rian Johnson released a special video for fans about wrapping Day 1 of filming Star Wars: Episode VIII back in mid-February of last year (as featured on Jimmy’s Daily Planet), so the hype for this movie has been building for what will turn out to be about 2 years come this December.
