“…just for one day”

Jimmy’s Daily Planet happily declares today “Wallflowers Wednesday!”

Ironically, one of this band’s most famous songs (and the one featured below) was written and originally performed by famed singer David Bowie. However, Jakob Dylan’s unique voice just added an entirely other level to the lyrics and the song altogether. Consequently, most people typically assume it’s a Wallflowers classic.

It’s not (in the traditional sense).

Yet, it still doesn’t take any of the gravitas away from this tribute of sorts.

It’s Wednesday, so it’s time to listen to and enjoy some Wallflowers.

“We can be heroes, just for one day”

Just Need One Winning Ticket in the Lottery

Today has the potential to be game-changing, literally six years in the making.

These are the moments we work for during the workweek grind and on those beautiful Saturday mornings, afternoons and nights when everyone else is out having fun. Interestingly, for the past several years, the goal has remained the same. However, the chances of it coming to fruition has been a relentlessly nervi circumstance (thank you Ian Darke). Just like other valuable things in my life, I don’t want to make the mistake of getting too ahead of myself (it’s happened before with not so happy results).

But what if it really happens this time?

In that case, the celebration will paint the night sky like the 4th of July while I write the final words of a chapter never intended to extend beyond a brief rest between major chapters in my life. If all goes well (especially if the good news is told today), then I will feel like I just won a million dollars.

Speaking of which, that reminds me of a song by a band that sings the theme song to a sitcom in which the actors are currently requesting a million dollars per episode.

In the real and imagined world of having a million dollars, what would I do…?

Let’s revisit what the Barenaked Ladies think about this proposition:

The best thing is that “a million dollars” doesn’t literally have to be a million dollars.

It’s just that feeling of winning something so awesome that things start to fall into place with joyous, relieved precision.

What does a million dollars mean to you?

The Soundtrack of Our Imagination

There are familiar faces that we see on the news and television on a relentless basis, for a variety of reasons. But it’s always fascinating to see and hear from people who have quietly made a permanent imprint on our lives with works that are nothing short of magnificent when we consider it all evolved from an idea and a blank canvas.

Or from an empty musical page waiting to be filled-in with iconic musical notes for generations to admire.

The journey of master composer John Williams is well-documented in such blockbuster hits as Jaws, Schindler’s List, Superman and Jurassic Park (to literally name only a few). Mr. Williams doesn’t give many interviews or insights into his everyday life, but perhaps all it took was another Mr. Williams to convince him to reveal a little bit about himself. The interview is from a little while ago, but intriguing nonetheless.

He’s one of the drivers of our imaginations:

Telling powerfully moving stories without any words.

Old school indeed.

Midnight in France

When living and breathing in the midst of the impossible transcends into a reality of playful imagination and limitless possibilities, then there’s not only a story there, but a delightful tale exposing the ambiguity and magical nature of love and life.

Throw in France nearly a century ago (a “golden age” to some) and a short guy with thick, black glasses from the Bronx and we can all take pleasure in traveling back to a time and place that will reveal something profound about ourselves today. Woody Allen is an iconic writer and director, while simultaneously defined as a controversial figure. However, taking the latter aside for a moment, it should be noted how he expanded his audience with his inspired 2011 hit Midnight in Paris. It seems as though Mr. Allen discovered a way to feature his usual band of intellectually obnoxious characters, but this time with a sense of humor that is well contrasted with a “normal,” romantic protagonist.

Ironically, the protagonist in Midnight in Paris (played by the free spirit Owen Wilson) appeared to be a younger, wide-eyed version of Woody himself.

Nonetheless, that was then and this is now.

Magic in the Moonlight comes to theaters (wait, don’t tell me…) on July 25th.

From Owen Wilson to Colin Firth.

Wait, forget that. This movie stars the beautiful, wonderfully amusing Emma Stone.

Okay, no need to explain the title.
