Forever Yours

I’m quite flashy on the outside and at your disposal with a permanent knowledge of information you’ll need to know for the future. I am dressed top to bottom in the exact right colors. In fact, I’m a very sharp dresser. Although, to be completely honest, I did not dress myself. Still, I look good!

Summer has been very relaxing for me, though ultimately uneventful. However, when Fall rolls around, that is when my world will get really exciting. From this point on, everything will happen at a blistering pace. I’ll know where I’m sitting just minutes before kickoff. There are countless variables in the air and once the flow of the day starts, it’s anyone’s guess as to what could transpire next. I hear the band playing, see the sun shining and feel the warmth of a late September afternoon. Though I’m still felling chilly.

Life is good. In fact, OH-

It’s a long hike to the seats, but what a view! C-Deck is high up, but I can literally see everything on the field below. Without a doubt, this will be a glorious event. Today is what I’ve been waiting for all Summer. Luckily, this is just the beginning.

While I was hopeful I’d see the whole game, I suppose that was me being far too optimistic. Once the small popcorn ran out, my view was severely impaired. The time came when I had to go “below deck.” That’s my code for under the seat. I’ll likely remain here only until the game is over. Then, hopefully, my shelf life will soon begin.

Oh, I’m a souvenir cup from an Ohio State football game…and this is my story.

There is not always a guarantee that I’ll be picked up and taken home, but like my countless plastic brothers and sisters, I prayed before the game that my new friend would see me as more than just a medium Pepsi. I have so much more to offer!

The game ends and the Buckeyes dominated, which is what I gathered from all the cheering. Another great start to the season.

Will she pick me up? Please, please, please! There’s nothing I can do at this point but to sit here with my Scarlet and Grey shield, my trusty 2013 Schedule perfectly labeled and pray. This is the moment of truth. This is it. The next few seconds will change my life forever for better or worse…

She takes a quick “selfie” with the field in the background and a couple other pictures with her friends she met for the game. They were all in a celebratory mood. One step, two steps, three steps. She started her descent down C-Deck. A drip of leftover condensation rolled down my face. A few steps down the stairs, she turned her head and peered over her right shoulder. Thinking to herself, she debates whether or not she needs another cup. After all, last weekend she went to Target and bought lots of colored plastic cups for the school year. Technically, she was all set. After she took an exhaling breath, she gingerly made her way back towards her seat, reached down in the aisle and…

Yes! Yes! Yes! I successfully pulled off one of the most unthinkable things at the end of an OSU football game: a girl picked me up!

The rest of the day was a blur, a magical, life-altering blur.

Throughout the next several years, she and I were together during thick and thin, like that 10-page essay that was written in one evening and one really long night/early morning and when she spent a couple weeks on her couch after she sprained her ankle while she watched movies and television shows of past and present. Through everything, we were together. Despite sitting on a shelf most of the time, I somehow managed to stay on the shelf year after year. Even after slightly fading from those water and soap-soaked adventures in the dish washer, I survived. Every time.

The most special moments for me happened after she got married and had a child. Incredibly, during the need vs. want throwing away fest with her husband early on in her marriage, I stayed. Other precious items were thrown out, but I kept my spot on her shelf.

Back to her son. When she mixed some orange Tang for him in her trusty souvenir cup (me) one Tuesday after picking him up from school, she paused with a nostalgic smile. Turning the cup, it brought back memories of that day when she told all her friends she had gotten engaged the night before on a lake underneath the starry night in her hometown.

She nearly cried.

She then handed the cup to her son, now 5. As he drank it, she continued to reminisce about that weekend and how special it was for her. That game was one of those moments in life she’ll never forget. She’ll remember and cherish everything that was part of it…everything.

Then, as her son was was raising me higher and higher, some song lyrics popped into her head.

Summer’s heat or winter’s cold
The seasons pass the years will roll
Time and change will surely (truly) show
How firm thy friendship…OHIO!

She hugged her son and said “I love you.”

Talk about a Buckeye win for the ages.

Two Quarterbacks Walk onto the Field…

The Ohio State Buckeyes travel to Berkeley, California this Saturday to battle the aerial arsenal that is the Cal Bears for an early season match-up between the Big Ten and the Pac-12 conferences.

It’s the Midwest vs. the West Coast.

Before the 2013 season, nearly all the hype for the Buckeyes was dedicated to their star quarterback, Braxton Miller. However, after a nasty hit in last week’s game against San Diego State that left Miller’s helmet on the field after just nine plays, head coach Urban Meyer has yet to definitively clear him to start this weekend. Miller is considered to be a game time decision.

And yet, this is, potentially, not even the biggest headline going into the game.

The most intriguing question is how much playing time will backup sensation Kenny Guiton receive? Guiton has proven to play with a style very close to that of Miller, which could open up the offensive playbook for some very fun, unusual play calls where two quarterbacks are lined up in a spread formation.

Sound familiar Buckeye fans?

The storylines for the game in Berkeley consist of many aspects, like:

  • Cal’s passing offense vs. Ohio State’s active (or reactive) nature in the secondary
  • Ohio State’s diverse rushing attack
  • Will Braxton Miller start? If so, how much will he play? How effective will he be?
  • Does Kenny Guiton start? If not, how much time might he see?
  • Will Cal’s capable rusher deflect the young “Silver Bullets?”
  • Will defense, ultimately, be a factor? Or will the Bears and Buckeyes engage in an old fashioned western shootout?
  • How influential is Cal’s home field advantage?

Still, beyond the suspected pregame analysis, what would the Buckeyes look like with two athletic quarterbacks lined up in a spread formation? Imagine the possibilities…

Everyone is talking about Plan A (with Miller) or Plan B (with Guiton).

I’m thinking of a more dynamic formula. How about A + B?

Playing with the starting quarterback and backup quarterback in formations would be a very liberal approach to the offense and I can think of no better place to experiment with such an endeavor than Berkeley, California.

OH-It’s Good to be Home

Crew Stadium will once again play the patriotic host to a pivotal World Cup qualifying match. This evening, under a Midwestern blanket of stars, the United States of America will battle “That Team Down South.”

The stands will be painted with jerseys and shirts that will proudly showcase the brightest and boldest color combinations of red, white and blue. The chanting and support will be relentless because, honestly, it’s the USMNT’s homecoming.

The fans, players and coaches all know what’s waiting for them. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. on ESPN, but the excitement has been building since the last match four years ago.

The stage is set for another defining 90 minutes of American soccer.

For the United States, tonight’s game can (should) provide this squad with a unique window into the future. Can the Americans regroup after suffering an embarrassing loss in Costa Rica 3-1 in a matter of just a few days with a depleted starting lineup (injury and yellow card accumulations)? Like today, and potentially during the summer of 2014 in Brazil, can the red-white and blue prove to have a short memory. When maximum points and victories are necessary and when the team is forced to travel between games, will Jürgen Klinsmann’s team rise to the occasion?

When an individual is under pressure, there are only two reactions: get crushed or push back.

The United States vs. Mexico is an incredible soccer rivalry. Luckily for the American players and fans, they will feel right at home in Columbus, Ohio. In the three World Cup Qualifying games played between these two nations at Crew Stadium (2001, 2005 and 2009), the United States has won all three games with a final tally of 2-nil.

Or, in better words: Dos a Cero.

There have been great goals, hard tackles, beautiful passes, yellow cards and McBride’s “eye wide shut.”

With three games left in World Cup qualifying and a point differential of 1 between the United States and first-place Costa Rica, 5 between the U.S. and Mexico and 6 between Costa Rica and Mexico, tonight’s match is critical for both teams.

The stakes are undeniably high. The rivalry is real. This is the game and Crew Stadium is the venue!

To build the suspense even more, there will be several intriguing story lines playing out tonight in the heat inside (but really outside) the house Lamar built.

  • Without the maestro in the middle, can the U.S. be guided without the quiet, steady leadership of Michael Bradley?
  • How will Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey play together in such a vitally important game? Will they be the catalysts or finishers on goals?
  • Will Mexico, having fired its head coach last Saturday morning, be dejected or inspired by pride?
  • How many yellow and red cards will the ref show or not show?
  • Will Chicharito (Javier Hernández Balcázar) play like a Manchester United star?
  • Besides Tim Howard, which American player will take the strategic and emotional leadership role tonight? FYI-This responsibility is not limited to the man wearing the captain’s armband…
  • Does the American side have a reliable and dependent back line?
  • Will the United States of America pull off another paramount victory in front of its best crowd?

Now, the most critical question: will it be miraculously cold tonight like back in 2001? The forecast says mid-80s, so probably not. But remember: this is Columbus, where the hopes and dreams of American soccer fans, players and coaches come true…

Plus, it all depends on how you define “cold.”

Another 2-nil win for the U.S. could seriously start to freeze the hopes of a berth to the 2014 World Cup in sunny Brazil for “That Team Down South.”

I’m getting chills just thinking about it!

Will They Use GBS as Their Guide?

Yesterday morning, the Columbus Crew announced that the 5-year Robert Warzycha era as the head coach of the Columbus Crew had ended.

Incredibly, after five years, nearly every single Crew fan reverted back to the first leg of the 2009 playoffs in Salt Lake City when Warzycha benched the Crew’s Argentinian star player, Guillermo Barros Schelotto. Columbus lost the game 1-nil. Recall that Columbus had won the Supporter’s Shield (for the second year in a row) and therefore was the number one seed in the playoffs. The expectations were high with an unthinkable repeat as MLS Cup champions on the horizon for Crew Nation.

And then the head coach benched the Crew’s star player. It’s been a long five seasons of seeing the erosion of the shine and jubilant celebrations from the Crew players and coaches hoisting the MLS Cup back in 2008 at the Home Depot Center in sunny Los Angeles, California. Actually, now it’s the StubHub Center, which only adds distance to the memories of the Crew’s magical season.

Through five seasons, Warzycha accumulated 70 wins. That seems like a lot, until you divide that number by 5 and discover it equates to about 14 wins a year. That translates to the Crew winning, on average, less than half of the games it played/season. And, again, recall that the Crew won MLS Cup in 2008 and earned the Supporter’s Shield for the second straight season in 2009.

Yes, Warzycha was the head coach in 2009. However, he was clearly riding the wave of momentum (Surf Ohio!) of 2008 and when he finally interjected “his style” just in time for the playoffs, the fans witnessed the precedent of what has transpired the past 4-seasons.

Imagine “Groundhog Day” with soccer.

While the Columbus Crew is not officially eliminated from the playoffs, it was looking nearly impossible under Warzycha. Hence, the coaching change with eight games remaining.

It must be said Warzycha was an effective assistant coach under Sigi Schmid and a skilled member of the Columbus Crew as a player (#19, “The Polish Rifle”). For that, we thank him and wish him good luck in his future endeavors.

Brian Bliss (the Technical Director) has been chosen to serve as the interim head coach.

However, now is the time to seek, find and hire a new head coach. The ideal candidate needs to have successful, professional experience (coaching and/or playing) and an effective and efficient style of play in mind while encouraging plenty of space and opportunities for creativity. The flow should be quick, smooth and exciting. The tempo should demonstrate control and purpose.

The new head coach needs to instill trust in the fans and generate a pulse on the field of a team fully capable and driven to winning championships again.

Ironically, Crew Nation would be quite joyful to see Guillermo Barros Schelotto on the bench again…as long as it’s in the spot closest to the center line.
