Still Learning to Fly
Sure, 31 is just a number.
This is a factual statement, yes, but it’s a real number that sparks real reactions.
Turning 31 today evoked a strange feeling. Not as seismic a response as 30, but substantial nonetheless. How did I get here? Remain calm, the following sentences are not going to dive into the depths of my psyche (perceived vs. reality). The questions that I find myself asking are more concerned with how I got here relative to reacting in the immediate future. Immediate meaning the next minute, hour, day and month.
To be frank, these are inquiries that are difficult to answer. However, one of the benefits of getting older is knowing where to look. And that’s paramount.
The Foo Fighters are usually a good first step.
“Learn to Fly” is still one of my all-time favorite songs after all these years.
That has to mean something.
The Sweet Sound of Eureka
Randomness is a wonderful thing.
Occasionally, the gift of randomly stumbling onto something completely out of the blue can pay enormous dividends. Perhaps “stumbling” isn’t the best word…”slashing” sounds better.
Today is one of those days.
Slash (birth name is Saul Hudson) is a living legend and icon, famous for his trademark curly black hair, black top hat and black aviator shades.
Oh, and he riffs on the guitar from time-to-time.
Slash’s talent is visionary and his wisdom is equally enlightening. Watching a documentary (Slash: Raised on the Sunset Strip) about his life growing up on the Strip is a must-see for anybody even mildly interested in the rock scene in LA. Some of music’s biggest names during the past 30 years explained their experiences and personal connections with this crazy good musician dedicated to his craft.
His musical portfolio, and persona, will survive the test of time. Slash is among a special collection of rock stars that will inspire future musicians to pick up an instrument in a music shop as opposed to a laptop (or enter a nationally televised singing competition) to make music that connects with people on a deeply personal level.
On that note…
Randomness: The gift that keeps on giving.
Happy Monday!
Guns N’ Roses + Dave Grohl’s throne + Angus Young + an AC/DC classic =
Performing at Coachella this past Saturday night, Gun N’ Roses called up rock n’ roll buddy Angus Young from AC/DC to provide a little electricity (and Duck Walk) on-stage alongside Slash and Duff as Axl Rose was forced to sit with a broken foot. However, despite his limitation, it was recently announced that Axl will tour with AC/DC (lead singer has to rest with hearing problems) starting May 7th in Portugal. Once his crossover with his Australian friends concludes, the Rose of Guns N’ Roses will return for a U.S. stadium tour beginning mid-June.
Injury or not, rock n’ roll should always have a stage available with Fender amps ready to be blown out by a Les Paul.
Welcome to the New Week!
Sounds Like Animal’s Spirit
Dave Grohl.
Now that I have your undivided attention…
America’s rock ‘n roll ambassador (Dave Grohl) made a special appearance on the latest episode of The Muppets on ABC. After traveling for much of the day and enduring cancellations and weather delays at the airport, seeing the following the drum-off was a great way to end this memorable Wednesday.
Four sticks, three back-and-forths, two drum sets and one unforgettable performance for kids (and adults) made for a special television event.
This drum-off does beg the question posed by Jason Segel in The Muppets movie:
Man or muppet?
