During the summer in 1991, The Rocketeer flew into our imaginations with rocket-fueled fun (don’t forget about the gum). To a six-year-old, it was a spectacular time to be alive. What was better than the idea of flying like Superman, without needing Kryptonian genetics, through the skies to save the world?

The answer was nothing.

Mesmerized, I took it upon myself to scrounge through my very own tool shed/kitchen drawers to find the necessary pieces to build my own personal flying machine. With an old garage door opener in hand, I was one click away from soaring to unknown heights and adventure! This enthusiasm was shared by Adam Goldberg in last night’s episode, except his cinematic obsession was the cult favorite, The Princess Bride. Specifically, it was the film’s famous sword fight that drew him in. Fought on a dramatically set cliff, the battle was intense and immensely entertaining. And the dialogue was surprisingly equitable and conversational.

Another battle fought on a cliff of sorts was between Adam and Murray, underscored by a jockeying of similar interests and ulterior motives. Using Westley-level charm, Adam convinced his stingy dad to buy him two fencing swords to practice in his “pursuit” of becoming a future Olympic champion. Unfortunately, the overly dramatic hijinks in The Princess Bride were no match for Murray, who saw right through his son’s grand manipulation. It also didn’t help that immediately after quitting fencing, Adam was sword fighting Dave Kim in his basement in full Princess Bride gear.

Plus, stabbing your father in the neck rarely helps anything.

Meanwhile, Beverly was busy being a yenta hell-bent on cross-fitting athletics with music. The result was the sweet sound of faculty romance (and kissing at school). The only downside was ruining Barry and Erica’s lives. Oh, and can’t forget about altering the stable career path of a certain music teacher. Besides that, this social experiment was a rousing success.

In order to fix everything, Beverly had to match up the unmatchable, romantically bitter teacher in his brown clothing from head -to-toe. But if this series has taught us anything, it’s that there are three words that inspire the greatest from Beverly Goldberg:

“Can’t be done.”

Back to Adam, he would need magic that could only be found in one place. The question was whether Murray would play along. This situation called for both sides to realize to be bigger than their own self-interests, no matter how embarrassing. Adam discovered his fencing inspiration from The Princess Bride for his fencing battle in front of a large crowd at school, including his dad and grandfather sitting front row center. And would you believe it? Embodying the goofy personalities from a movie led to an unexpected point for the swordsman-in-training. And in perfect harmony with his son, Murray literally embodied a giant character’s clothes (André, to be precise) from The Princess Bride movie for a scene of bonding with his youngest son and his friends after the match.

One of Adam’s dreams came true: His father understood the importance of an influential movie in his life.

You could say it was an inconceivable reality.

Whilst engaging in misguided hilarity, Beverly did manage to match the unmatchable with a little help from a future yenta. Erica couldn’t fight it, she has meddling DNA. In this instance, Beverly’s excitement nearly reached the adrenaline level achieved at a Jazzercise session.

This episode beautifully revealed that no matter how much we may resist things that we swear to ourselves are foolish and/or ridiculous, we are uncontrollably drawn to the foolish and ridiculous because, despite all logical reasoning, we know deep down that wishes are meant to come true.

Sometimes, all it takes is clicking play on a VCR…or an old garage door opener.

Netflix’s House Just Got Fuller

It might finally be time to bite the bullet and subscribe to Netflix.

With an increasing list of television hits in its digital portfolio (House of Cards, Arrested Development, Orange is the New Black), this streaming media service continues to provide consumers with acclaimed, award-winning content. And to prove its cultural awareness and high-quality prowess, it was announced ~12 hours ago on Jimmy Kimmel Live! by John Stamos (“Uncle Jesse”) that Netflix has signed on with a 13-episode order of a spinoff to the 1980s-1990s sitcom smash hit, Full House.

The spinoff will be deftly titled, Fuller House.

Without diving into a thesis on the incomparable nature, influence and surreal number of amazingly timeless sitcoms from the mid-1980s-mid-2000s, this move by the original cast and creators of Full House is a wonderful decision and revival to a series not forgotten by fans for one second since its series finale on May 23, 1995.

There’s only one thing that can be said now: Have Mercy!

Sorry, I’ll cut-it-out. I know, I know, how rude!

I was just reading from my Clipboard of Fun.

Bottom line: Will I watch, Fuller House?

You got it, dude!

Happy Monday!

A bootleg is nothing new. As a matter of fact, for anyone who has ever walked through the bustling streets of a major city, it’s as common as a 3-figure gold Rolex. Sure, the time is only right twice a week, but it looks like a Rolex at passing glance.

But what happens when a bootleg teases something that hasn’t reached a global audience yet and it changes an entire movie studios’ elaborate trailer release plan that was only a few days away from occurring with spectacular fanfare and that even forced a direct response from the director of said film the very next day?

Welcome to director Zack Snyder’s world last Thursday night.

It’s being reported that the trailer leak of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice late last week originated from Brazil with a cell phone capture of the trailer with Portuguese subtitles. The quality was low, yet it clearly showed it was for the highly-anticipated superhero epic to-be-released on March 25, 2016. Snyder took to his Twitter account Friday to attempt to counter the early teaser trailer release with the official video and hashtags, “#BatmanvSuperman #NotBlurry #NotPirated.”

While the planned IMAX event at select movie theaters tonight will feature the trailer, a message from Snyder, a few additional shots and some goodies, below is the long-awaited trailer for the public:

Snyder was clever at leaving Easter eggs throughout Man of Steel (regarding Bruce Wayne, Lex Luthor and Aquaman) and it seems he’s continued this fun trend in the trailer above. Watch it again and pause at the 1:21 mark. Notice that question mark on the cement column in the foreground on the left side with Batman standing in the background…?

Have a Super Week!

P.S. The first look at Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne brooding (a pivotal expression for the character) somehow appears to have missed the mark, confirming my initial criticism of his casting. And yes, it may be a hasty response (fair enough) and it was always going to be impossible to follow Christian Bale and The Dark Knight trilogy, but still…

The Force is Strong in J.J.

3? 5? 10? More than 10?

How many times have you watched the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer since it debuted just yesterday afternoon? While there are still many questions and surprises that remain for Episode VII, a few things are clear:

  • This movie will be rooted like the first three Star Wars movies that premiered in theaters between 1977-1983 to surreal fanfare, which were centered in realism without heavy interference from distractingly obvious special effects
  • There are at least 3 new lead characters that will open the story up into new, exciting directions
  • Harrison Ford Han Solo and Chewbacca look fantastic and Luke Skywalker’s narration was a fantastic homage to the character and a past film, as well as being a very intriguing plot teaser…
  • Christopher Nolan’s cinematic treasure, The Dark Knight trilogy, has inspired yet another movie franchise. This time, it’s the ambiguously broken/battered villain mask of Darth Vader that is reminiscent of the image of Batman’s mask in The Dark Knight Rises
  • So far, J.J. Abrams is proving that he was definitely the right choice for this Star Wars resurgence

Go ahead, watch it again:

Only 8 more months to go!
