Watching Between the Lines

Remember, “the force” started as two words on a page.

The Star Wars universe (movies, TV, merchandise, theme parks, etc.) is not only seeing a massive pop culture resurgence akin to its 1977 fanfare, but this franchise/brand is restyling movie promotions and marketing. For instance, Jimmy’s Daily Planet featured the release of Star Wars: Episode VIII‘s production announcement three weeks ago, which was a video teasing the first scene in the follow-up to The Force Awakens. That was a first; a hype video of the first day of shooting for a new film.

For marketers (and movie fans like myself), this new, dare it be said innovative, kind of announcement is exciting. However, too many teases too early does result in frustrating fatigue. Fortunately, the savvy marketing team for Star Wars has followed up their Episode VIII teaser with another video that will give fans a much quicker return than December 2017.

Remember that picture of the very first table read of The Force Awakens? The one that brought together the original cast and new blood for the revival of a globally beloved series? It appears as if curious fans will be able to get (and hear) the full experience of that now famous moment.

Ladies and gentlemen: Star Wars presents…a table read.

Star Wars has, once again, changed the way we watch movies.

Come April 5th, you can watch this iconic table read and more (as in the actual movie) in Blu-Rey.

Happy Monday!

Star Wars: The Force Takes Over

A week-and-a-half into its premiere and The Force Awakens has gifted 2015 with its second $1 billion+ box office monster (the first was Jurassic World). The space epic also became the fastest movie to achieve the aforementioned cinematic feat, barely edging out its prehistoric competition. Star Wars fanatics are undeniably confirming and showcasing their storied, wide-spread fandom to the world and its outer galaxies through ticket sales at the hyper-drive of the Millennium Falcon.

Fans are ecstatic that the old gang (and its new crew) are, as Han Solo says in the trailer, “home.”

Fortunately for us, the creative minds at ESPN joined forces with Star Wars royalty for a special documentary of sorts. The worldwide leader in sports ventured across the galaxy to become the worldwide leader in…

The Force Awakens: The New Hope

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now in theaters!

It all started back in 1977 with Star Wars IV: A New Hope. As we all know, it was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

Good vs. Evil. Droids and Lightsabers. Storm Troopers and Jedi’s. Han Solo and Princess Leia. The Death Star and the Millennium Falcon.

The spoiler-free reviews and reactions from the privileged few who have already seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens have been stellar. And why shouldn’t they be? Embracing the out-of-this-world expectations, director and sci-fi aficionado J.J. Abrams seems to have delivered on the fresh reboot of the beloved franchise. The trailers look fantastic, the cast incredible (Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac), the story appears to have an intriguing premise and feel and, most importantly, the sets are rooted in practical effects.

The latter is paramount because green-screens can ruin even the most popular series (cough cough Star Wars prequels). Yes, there are digital effects in The Force Awakens. However, practical sets seems to have trumped digital wherever possible. This extra effort and attention to detail is a great tribute to the original 1977 and 1980s episodes IV-VI, which were driven by the story and its iconic characters.

Speaking of iconic characters, perhaps the best way to prepare for Episode VII is to watch the most famously pivotal scene from the Star Wars saga.

Luke Skywalker vs. Darth Vader.

After the disastrous prequels, The Force Awakens seems to be offering Star Wars fans optimism not only for this movie, but for the next two chapters episodes in this epic space saga.

J.J. Abrams + Company (Bad Robot and Lucasfilm) seems to have found the force within themselves and it has led them to their cinematic destiny:

The right side of the Star Wars universe.

Happy Monday!

During a Monday Night Football halftime break, projected on television screens for all to see, fans were blown, blown away…

This new trailer (and pre-sale tickets) has awakened the world yet again to the ever-expanding Star Wars universe. It is ironic, though, how The Force Awakens trailer was scheduled for its big reveal during the halftime of an NFL game. Consider that when the movies first premiered, the football jocks made fun of the science-fiction nerds who were fans of Star Wars.

How the world has changed with help from lightsabers, iconic characters in the ultimate battle of good vs. evil and the force.

And that gold bikini.
