The Instrumental Heartbeat of Cinema

When a story is so unique and stellar, it’s difficult to let it go.

Christopher Nolan and Hans Zimmer are film making BFF’s (perhaps not the bonding phrase these reserved movie maestros would use). The many collaborations with Mr. Nolan writing and directing and Mr. Zimmer composing powerful accompanying movie soundtracks have left audiences in awe and amazement in the theater and in the years beyond the film’s premiere. The video below has been featured on this blog before, yet its story of how the score of the emotionally-driven Interstellar (2014) evolved from a rather ambiguous note is remarkable.

And Throwback Thursday seems like a fitting day to showcase the kind of random spark that creates movie magic.

That’s why we go to the movies…

and it’s inspiring that there are movie-makers who know why.

Christopher Nolan’s Epic (Cinematic) War Takes Shape

The first full trailer for THE movie of this summer has arrived…

In a word: Dunkirk.

Director and screenwriter Christopher Nolan and BFF soundtrack composer Hans Zimmer appear ready to deliver yet another cinematic epic. The ticking clock at the beginning of the trailer and the ominous heartbeat at the end of the trailer signals an unrelentingly gritty war movie with just the slightest bit of hope barely visible in a living hell that will require the ultimate sacrifice, courage and cleverness to merely survive through the greatest obstacles of the body and the mind.

Welcome to Christopher Nolan’s first war movie: Stunning visuals rooted in realism, practical effects galore, brilliant writing with twists-and-turns and a supreme cast with the underrated wild card (cough cough Harry Styles). And being a film by Mr. Nolan, rest assured that there will a mind-bending aspect attached. How or what will it be?

As the cinema fan Christopher Nolan himself would say, “That’s why we go to the movies…to experience a film that connects with us on a deeply curious and enlightening level.”

And experience Dunkirk I will.

This Gal’s Got Legs (Musically)

Many of us are still on a high (of excitement) from the new Wonder Woman trailer.

Yes, yes and yes.

The ending of said trailer was especially satisfying because the score/sound for Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman from Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (courtesy of Hans Zimmer) was brought back for continuity for Ms. Gadot’s solo movie. Thank goodness! Mr. Zimmer and Junkie XL produced a good score for Dawn of Justice, but his Wonder Woman theme is the undeniable high note of the soundtrack.

Here’s a refresher.

The Wonder Woman track is titled, “Is She with You?”

The answer should always be yes.

Happy Monday!

For some strange reason, the journey to an athletic championship is sometimes given greater value than the actual championship game and its eventual winner.

Once again, Jimmy’s Daily Planet wants to introduce some of that pre-championship coverage to musical scores. Specifically, Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL, who are the joint composers of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Going inside the minds to learn a little bit how the creative process works is something special. Discovering the inspirational sparks that led Mr. Zimmer and Mr. XL to go from the blank page at Point A to the finished sound at Point Z is not only cool, but educational if you listen carefully.

A rare combination, yes, but a wonderful sentiment and incentive for Monday.

Have an Awesome Week!
