Christopher Nolan’s Epic (Cinematic) War Takes Shape
The first full trailer for THE movie of this summer has arrived…
In a word: Dunkirk.
Director and screenwriter Christopher Nolan and BFF soundtrack composer Hans Zimmer appear ready to deliver yet another cinematic epic. The ticking clock at the beginning of the trailer and the ominous heartbeat at the end of the trailer signals an unrelentingly gritty war movie with just the slightest bit of hope barely visible in a living hell that will require the ultimate sacrifice, courage and cleverness to merely survive through the greatest obstacles of the body and the mind.
Welcome to Christopher Nolan’s first war movie: Stunning visuals rooted in realism, practical effects galore, brilliant writing with twists-and-turns and a supreme cast with the underrated wild card (cough cough Harry Styles). And being a film by Mr. Nolan, rest assured that there will a mind-bending aspect attached. How or what will it be?
As the cinema fan Christopher Nolan himself would say, “That’s why we go to the movies…to experience a film that connects with us on a deeply curious and enlightening level.”
And experience Dunkirk I will.

Using the same marketing playbook as his 2014 science-fiction epic Interstellar, Mr. Nolan, Syncopy and Warner Bros. are offering the first theatrical glimpse about a year out from the release date (July 21, 2017). Given the success and ground-breaking nature of previous films from Christopher Nolan, his World War II story about the Dunkirk evacuation will have relentless buzz and anticipation. Nolan Fans, like myself, have been excited for this movie ever since it was revealed Chris and his brother Jonathan were spotted scouting shooting locations in the French commune. It’s fair to presume that attention for this film will not only last, but build with excitement during the next yearlong time frame.
And yes, I have the exact same question as you: Can I buy my ticket today?
Dunkirk’s Memento
Christopher Nolan’s next film will be…
Un film Seconde Guerre mondiale (A World War II movie).
Instead of venturing into the deepest depths of our subconscious or navigating towards the the farthest galaxies in space, Mr. Nolan and his wife (who co-founded Syncopy) and his brother Jonathan will travel back in time to the 1940s in war-torn France, possibly in a straightforward, linear fashion.
That, in itself, is a bit of a mind-bender.
“News began to surface over the weekend via French newspapers that Nolan was planning a WWII movie, and that he and his brother, screenwriter Jonathan Nolan, had been scouting in Dunkirk. The story centers on the 1940 evacuation of more than 300,000 Allied troops who were surrounded by the German army in the French city of Dunkirk”

As each new detail about Dunkirk involving the script, casting (of course Michael Caine will be in it), the biggest news is that Mr. Nolan appears to be widening his genre portfolio IMAX-style and, therefore, is taking his second daring step into the mainstream with a war movie.
I’m counting The Dark Knight trilogy as one step.
Is Dunkirk a hint of what’s to come regarding future Christopher Nolan projects?
