Predictable? Yes. Unstoppable? Also Yes.

What is it the kids say these days? “Flashback Friday”?

For one very specific reason, I’m glad the kids do. Actually, I’m technically happy for five specific reasons. But those added four take a back seat to the aforementioned one on this Friday. And don’t worry, you’ll see why and how I arrived at that conclusion shortly.

If you survived that linguistic adventure, then congrats! In human speak, Bayern Munich hosted Arsenal for the first game of the round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League. Due to the very nature of the home-and-away game setup, the home side has the burden of scoring many goals while not conceding the always valuable away goal.

The bad news is that Bayern Munich did let one of those away goals slip past their goal line (even after an incredible penalty kick save by Manuel Neuer).

The good news is that Bayern Munich managed to score one…two…three…four…yes, five goals against Arsenal at their Fortress of Winning (a nickname I’m trying out) known as the Allianz Arena!

Ladies and gentlemen, the aforementioned one moment isolated for this “Flashback Friday”comes from two days ago. But trust me, it’s definitely worth the immediate flashback treatment.

(Watch the entire highlight to see the ball’s ridiculously awesome path to the back of the net)

Wait, I thought Arsenal’s nickname was “The Gunners”?

I say that because it looks like Arjen Robben’s left foot should be the one declared a sharpshooter with laser precision.

Even Zeus Was Impressed

Gold medals are a pretty cool thing to accumulate and make space for on the shelf and every collection has to start with that first piece.

Or race.

Michael Phelps, competing in the 400m Individual Medley (as seen above) at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, started his gold medal legacy. And with a world record, no less. That’s just crazy impressive. The greatest swimmer in the sport’s history, by every modern standard and measure, has been dominating in the pool and with casual sports fans alike for a dozen years. Perhaps the most surreal reality, however, is that Michael Phelps isn’t finished in Rio.

His pursuit for gold continues.

Simply put: Michael Phelps is defining his own Gold Rush era with his stellar performances spanning the past few summer Olympics.

The Rolling Michael Phelps Gold Medal Count: 22.

The Boundlessness of Crazy

Absolutely crazy.

The world changed forever after the horrific attacks occurring on 9/11. In fact, it’s surreal just how much the world seemed to change on a dime following that heart-wrenching September morning. But that’s a much longer post for another day. Along with New York City, Washington D.C. forever altered its security protocols, procedures and precautions after that day. Traveling to, driving and walking around our nation’s capital pre-9/11 and post 9/11 have been starkly different experiences. The former felt relatively open and relaxing while the latter has felt armed and distant.

And that’s okay, because we are not fighting another country, but Islamic extremists who cowardly attack using disguised guerrilla warfare. The war is not with the collective, but the individual. Accordingly, the proper defense demands acute awareness at all times.

Or so we thought.

Reading reports and watching videos that reenacted the White House intruder’s path has been mind-boggling. How in the hell did this happen? It’s more difficult to steal a book at Barnes and Noble than it is to enter the front door of The White House with a knife in hand and then run from room to room looking for the President of the United States of America. Think about that! The intruder, Omar Gonzalez, was one turn away from the stairs that lead up to the first family’s living quarters.

So, somebody in the secret service please remind us: If you’re not even going to lock the front door or even guard the outer perimeter of The White House, the most important building and symbol in the nation, then what’s been with all the extra security all these years? This is just another instance of when people are again forced to answer the question of, “can you believe this happened?” with “actually, yes, yes I can.” I was in Washington, D.C. this past Monday afternoon and stood with a group of tourists behind extra barricades to The White House across the street from the iconic St. Johns Church. Looking around, it’s still inconceivable how someone could jump the fence, run across the lawn and then into The White House.

And this is only the tip of the iceberg with the Secret Service and this is all combined with the myriad of domestic and global events the past few years that are causing the world to spin out of control with increasing lack of trust in vital institutions and people. But if this of all things happened, what can we possibly expect to take place next? The world continues to get more and more nonsensical. Things are just crazy.

Absolutely crazy.

Happy Monday!

The 2014 World Cup will surely kick-off with extravagant festivities and fanfare for the opening match between the host-nation Brazil and Croatia this Thursday at 4:00 p.m. ET. Four years after Spain lifted the greatest trophy in all of sports, the time has finally arrived to once again put on jerseys, t-shirts, flags and scarves with our nation’s colors, cheer on our favorite teams and players and witness the best soccer the world has to offer.

In an effort to promote this wondrous occasion, McDonald’s selected a few unsuspecting soccer savants to film who demonstrate some serious skills in everyday locations.

The beautiful game indeed.

Happy Monday!
