Today’s edition of “Throwback Thursday” is a very special one.

As a nine year-old who was (and still is) an enthusiastic soccer fan, attending SoccerFest at the Los Angeles Convention Center was amazing. The United States went all-in for promoting the world’s game to its skeptical American sports audience. By hosting the World Cup tournament, Americans got to see and experience the beautiful game up close and personal.

Granted, SoccerFest was more than 20 years ago. But I still vividly remember walking up to the glass case with THE World Cup trophy inside, which was stop-in-your-tracks mesmerizing. I had an unforgettable time on this special birthday trip with my Dad. This included playing beach soccer, recording a video of me saving shots from the world’s best strikers on a VHS tape, taking home a beautiful poster that was signed by the artist (who was #22 for the USMNT) and getting my very own Soccer America magazine cover.

While I may be biased here, the kid dribbling the soccer ball at the :22 and :24 second mark looks really familiar…

I still think the U.S. jerseys from the 1994 World Cup were awesome. The jerseys are definitely better than anything Nike has designed (a generous term) lately. The full kits proudly (and boldly) showcased America in red, white and blue, stars and all.

And regarding SoccerFest, the star was definitely my Dad.

Priced Into the NFL Through the ATL

People say, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.”

According to the Atlanta Falcons, his wallet may be a close second.

“In any fan survey, food and beverage is one of the most important drivers of fan experience and the one that is the most broken,” Cannon said. “It’s either lack of quality, lousy delivery or bloodcurdling pricing.”

To be more specific, a revised menu for Atlanta Falcons games in 2017:

Equate this revolutionary move (yes, food prices are so high at every sports stadium that this can be considered, “revolutionary”) with the installation of state-of-the-art scoreboards and seats. By conceding to the public that the prices across the board for average food and drinks at sporting events are senselessly astronomical, the Atlanta Falcons have put sports programs (collegiate and professional) on immediate notice.

Lower prices or else.

The “or else,” thanks to the Falcons, appears to have been weakened in no small measure. People are increasingly being priced out of the refreshment market at sporting events. Particularly if the lower-priced menu works (quality and revenue), if other venues and teams don’t follow with similar revisions, they will be viewed as unnecessarily greedy. Ticket prices and seating options for the games alone are out of control, not including any special rivalry, tournament or championship.

On a completely unrelated note, have you noticed your friends investing in stunning high-definition TVs and sound systems as opposed to spending the equivalent on a single game to be seen from the rafters? Can’t imagine why this is…

It seems like Mr. Cannon and Co. are attempting to get the pendulum to slowly swing back towards prioritizing and rewarding fans and their experience. Sporting events are supposed to bring us together for fun, memorable moments. If you want to pay extra for special benefits (view, proximity, parking, etc.), that’s one thing. But to pay for the 50-yeard line package at a football game for the bare minimum in terms of quality of seats and the crazy high cost of a small popcorn and a single drink is what infuriates so many sports patrons.

We have to contemplate our bank statements before “investing” in a hamburger.

The Atlanta Falcons are at least trying to ease a little bit of the monetary pain. And while we won’t know the verdict without people paying for and responding to the more affordable menu, the prospect is nonetheless promising as a first step.

$5 for domestic beers still seems quite high. However, that may be an issue of sobriety control as opposed to a cost-benefit analysis.

Falconry does require a clear mind. The falcon can’t be hot-dogging it.

Actually, for two bucks in Atlanta next year, falcons (and its fans) will be able to.

Flexing for the NFL

Will not tucking in one’s shirt become the style trend of 2016 in the business world?

Maybe in Dallas.

With the fourth pick in the NFL Draft in Chicago, Illinois, the Dallas Cowboys selected Ezekiel Elliott of The Ohio State University. Widely considered as the best running back in this year’s draft class (and one of the best overall athletes), Zeke not only showed flashes of his potential to succeed at the highest level, but he excelled in highlight reel after highlight reel for the Scarlet & Grey.

He’s a baller who will be a welcome addition by teammates, fans and Jerry Jones alike down in Dallas, Texas.

Mr. Elliott’s Buckeye pal Joey Bosa was drafted at No. 3 by the San Diego Chargers and Eli Apple was drafted at No. 10 by the New York Giants. Even as the First Round continues late into the night, the aforementioned picks collectively made for a special moment in the NFL Draft.

In the coming days, more history could be made by The Ohio State University. If “The Buckeye 14” becomes reality (14 players selected from one school), then, most importantly, smug Ohio State-hater Mark May will be receiving all kinds of fun, customized merchandise from Buckeye Nation.

Perhaps Mark May will receive another shout-out from Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer as he’s on the phone signing the future “Buckeye 15.”

What’s Inside a Soccer Ball?

Men, suits and ceremonial procedures.

That’s right, Europe’s footballing boardroom views the world’s most popular sport, played outside on grass, as a business. And the sport’s most important trophy for club teams was officially handed-over to its newest host city for the title game: Milan. The four teams that qualified for the Champions League semi-final learned their fate with their next opponent via a lottery drawing today.

Manchester City is the underdog in this high-stakes semi-final, despite its brand awareness. However, don’t completely count out the lone British club. Anything can happen in this sport, especially in the Champions League in the year 2016/two days ago.
