Dana Carvey Makes a Small Impression These Days

Today is a perfect day to laugh.

Dana Carvey, an SNL and impressions icon, performs new comedy in an old way. What do I mean? Some of the best SNL sketches are when well-known figures are made fun of with great insight and precision. But there’s a catch:

The jokes are not activist-driven.

The video above showcases an increasingly rare comedic gift. We have to be able to joke around with and about each other without getting heated about every single little detail. Sometimes we just need to laugh. Mr. Carvey’s sense of humor is laser-focused on the punchline instead of the punch. Jerry Seinfeld is the same way. And Mr. Seinfeld has said that he will care about you if you’re funny. Otherwise, he’s not interested.

A sage perspective, actually.

So, this is Nicolas Cage trying to order a medium Tall at Starbucks…

There Are No Words / A Real Star’s Banner Anthem

That Fergalicious take on the “Star-Spangled Banner” will not be lifted into the rafters of any basketball arena.

“The Star-Spangled Banner” is not an ordinary song. It’s much, much more. And messing up our beloved national anthem by taking the wrong (creative) approach will raise more than just eyebrows. In reflecting on Fergie’s terrible, cringe-worthy rendition of the national anthem before the NBA All-Star game this past Sunday, Slash came to mind for his clever and signature take on the very same national anthem a few years back.

But for very different reasons, as you’ll see and hear.

(Click the video below. It will play!)

For Slash, no words were necessary.

And yet, he said everything with an incredible instrumental that had Americans cheering on his symbolic tip of the hat to the song’s writer Francis Scott Key.

P.S. A Fun Fact: I am, as surreal as it reads, related to the aforementioned Francis Scott Key.

Okay, I’ll give this a shot:

My dad’s uncle (John Lentz) was married to Frances, whose grandfather’s brother was the grandfather of Francis Scott Key.

It’s Monday

“Pure Imagination,” as sung by the late Gene Wilder as the title character in 1971s cinematic masterpiece Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, is an untouchable classic. That’s a universal truth for a variety of reasons. And yet, the filmmakers behind 2018s Ready Player One used a new version of the aforementioned song in their latest trailer that may succeed as a worthy runner-up.

An old song is ready to be played for a new generation.

Have a Better Week Than Last Week.

If You Can’t Beet Him…

It’s the weekend!

Now, it may be tempting to take this opportunity to act a little differently than we do throughout the workweek. That’s completely normal and a good thing. However, be careful not to completely change who we are…

yeah–scratch that if it’s as hilarious as one of Jim’s pranks. It is quite difficult to beat a flashback from The Office (U.S.) on a Friday.

For all the reasons of why I don’t want to work with a person like Dwight K. Schrute, there just seems to be more reasons for why I really want to work with a person like Dwight K. Schrute. Why? Because concentrating some of my creative energy and resources on epic pranks would be crazy awesome.

Fact.
