A Baskets Case with Emails
It’s Day 2 of the workweek and you may still be stressed-out and relentlessly catching-up on projects or emails. And while expediency can be a massive benefit through the use of technology (particularly mobile tech), it has also proven to be a massive burden in some cases. We need/have to be able to disconnect from time-to-time. For some, however, the connection between expediency and expectation is linear and non-negotiable. In other words, if you can respond in the moment, some people expect you to respond at that exact second. No excuses.
Enter one of the problems with technology’s increasing speed: Lack of time and understanding to think, reflect or acknowledge reality.
Yes, the following is an interview with a comedian. Yes, you may, therefore, be tempted to write-off what he has to say about an isolated societal problem that seems like a reasonable fix in many (obviously not all) situations.
Yes, the interview is also funny.
(Interview is from last year, which is why it’s announced that Baskets airs on Thursdays in the video)
And yes, the no-work-emails after 5 p.m. sounds like a good idea to try to navigate the increasingly blurred line between our work and non-work life, fueled by the pressured expectation of instantaneous communication via technology.
And yes, season 3 of Baskets starring Zach Galifianakis starts airing tonight at 10 p.m. on FX.
Happy Monday!
As the workweek revs its engine yet again with that soothing, comforting alarm sound, it’s important to find some form of levity to break some of this tension. As we search our desk of scattered papers and emails on our computers for those tasks due today and later this week, things can begin to feel overwhelming. Monday mornings are inherently stressful for that pursuit alone.
Thankfully, this blog tries to make Mondays just a little easier, more enjoyable and/or inspiring. The latter doesn’t so much apply today, but hopefully, the following clip will fall into the enjoyable category.
It appears The Hangover was a theatrical smash hit for audiences, as well as the cast, crew, and director.
Have a Better Week Than Last Week.
portlAndia’s FUNny, WEIRD HIPster LEGACY
To serve as a subtle reminder about Portlandia’s eighth and final season airing Thursdays at 10 p.m. on IFC starring SNL alum Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, here’s a “Flashback Friday” interview with the wildly gifted character actor “funny Freddy” (bonus points if you get the reference).
Hipsters deserve a fair amount of societal ridicule, but the simultaneous love letter cleverly written throughout Portlandia proves the paramount truth that the communities that can laugh together can live together.
And that (forgive me) will be a pretty hip legacy for Portlandia.
Lara Croft’s New Craft
With movements nearly as precise as an intricately designed AI robot, Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander’s portrayal of video game favorite Lara Croft looks like quite a bit of adventurous summer fun will be coming soon to your local cinema (that will actually arrive this March). The film’s second trailer, released by Warner Bros. Pictures today, confirms that aforementioned fun.
Narratively, Tomb Raider seems comparable to Batman Begins; the first act in what will likely stretch out into a thrilling trilogy with a lead character who will add more grit and emotion to an already larger-than-life story. Similar to Christian Bale (also an Academy Award winner), Ms. Vikander should add more depth to Lara Croft’s motives and, consequently, her surroundings. By that, I mean the dangerous, life-threatening stakes in the film should be raised beyond a mere visual recreation or addition to the highly-acclaimed video game, which is saying something.
Tomb Raider just may succeed in rebranding a hero of sorts…who is kind of super in her ability to raid tombs, yet not a superhero by definition.
We’ll have to wait and see on March 16th if that analysis (along with the effects in the movie) were, in fact, a practical presumption.
