RIP Peter Mayhew

Peter Mayhew with Stuart Freeborn.

Peter Mayhew, the 7’3″ actor who played Chewbacca in the ‘Star Wars’ cinematic franchise, has died at the age of 74.

Harrison Ford, whose Han Solo character was bonded for life in the ‘Star Wars’ universe with Peter Mayhew’s Chewbacca character, wrote down his reaction to learning of his now late friend.

“Peter Mayhew was a kind and gentle man, possessed of great dignity and noble character. These aspects of his own personality, plus his wit and grace, he brought to Chewbacca. We were partners in film and friends in life for over 30 years and I loved him. He invested his soul in the character and brought great pleasure to the Star Wars audience. Chewbacca was an important part of the success of the films we made together. He knew how important the fans of the franchise were to its continued success and he was devoted to them. I and millions of others will never forget Peter and what he gave us all.  My thoughts are with his dear wife Angie and his children. Rest easy, my dear friend….”

An interesting tidbit of behind the scenes ‘Star Wars’ trivia reported by the Hollywood Reporter is that “Mayhew once said he got the part just by director George Lucas seeing him and being baffled by his 7-foot-2 stature.”

One of the best scenes between Harrison Ford and Peter Mayhew as their iconic characters occurred in their return appearance together, after many decades apart, in the 2015 global blockbuster ‘The Force Awakens.’

And one of the best characteristics of Chewie was his signature growl/voice.

RIP Peter Mayhew.

Revisiting the Golden Record’s Space in Human (and Non-Human) History

Forget talking with aliens. Instead, they might respond to a playlist. This was the logic in the late ’70s.

For this Throwback Thursday, join me in revisiting an actual musical playlist that was blasted into space a few decades ago with the sincere hope of being found by and listened to by, yes, aliens.

A couple of years ago, I made an investment on Kickstarter to receive a replica reproduction of the Golden Record. Reproduced and organized by Ozma Records, this was an opportunity that was too good to pass up. Listening to the eclectic soundtrack — songs and sounds of nature, like rain — it is truly unique to living on Earth.

Of course, there are plenty of additions that could and should be added from 40 years ago. More popular songs plus a few blockbuster, culture-altering movies, as well as classic TV shows, would be added for the Golden Record: Part II.

One of these new film additions would have to be ‘Independence Day.’

It’s Gonna Be Me With the May Meme

You know what day it is. You know the singer who is most popular on this day because of a clever word association. And you know what video has to be posted today, May 1.

It’s gonna be May today.

That is all.

What About Bob? His 36 Saves Helped Columbus Earn 2-1 Series Lead

6-1.

That is the current record of the Columbus Blue Jackets during the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs, which includes a 4-0 sweep of the top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning. Earlier tonight, the Blue Jackets held on for a 2-1 win against the Boston Bruins for a 2-1 series lead in the second round of the playoffs in front of–and with the support of–a thunderous home crowd of around 20,000 at Nationwide Arena.

A great scene.

Never trailing in Game 3 tonight, the Blue Jackets were opportunistic offensively and determined defensively. It’s quite a relief when one of the best goalies in the NHL, Sergei Bobrovsky (“Bob”), is an absolute beast between the pipes. His mobility has been on full display this postseason.

Blue Jackets Boone Jenner opened up scoring with 1:23 left in the first period. Matt Duchene doubled the lead for Columbus with 7:18 remaining in the second period and Boston’s Jake DeBrusk countered by the skin of his teeth (and an official video review) with 40 seconds left in the second period.

Surviving an offensive barrage by Boston for the full 20 minutes of the third period, Mr. BOBrovsky helped Columbus take the 2-1 series lead.

To any objective NHL fan and analyst, Columbus has been one of the (if not the) best team in this year’s playoffs thus far. With Artemi Panarin (the “Bread Man”) always looking for his shot and Sergei Bobrovsky protecting the goal, the Blue Jackets are a formidable force on both ends of the ice. What’s more is that, at least to an observer who is not in the locker room, it seems head coach John Tortorella has a team with no ego, intense focus to detail defensively and a belief that they can beat any team on any night if given the opportunity.

These characteristics are the differentiating factors that are defining the eye-opening success for the Columbus Blue Jackets right now.

Game 4 is back in Nationwide Arena this Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. on NBC Sports.
