‘I Have the Power’ to Transport Us Back to 1987

‘Masters of the Universe’ is a superhero movie released in 1987 that told the story of He-Man (Dolph Lundgren) and his skull-faced enemy Skeletor (Frank Langella).

Yes, that’s really acclaimed actor Frank Langella underneath that costume!

Mixing actors and practical effects with (then) state of the art graphics, this movie became a cult classic. Not exactly admired by critics yet some of our favorite movies have received similar (unfair) treatment.

What may surprise people is that this ’80s superhero classic featured young up-and-coming actress named Courtney Cox.

Again, that’s really true. And she delivered a great performance.

Oh, and the actor who played the principal in those ‘Back to the Future’ movies, James Tolkan, was in this movie too.

For this Throwback Thursday, let’s relax and enjoy the trailer for 1987s ‘Masters of the Universe.’

While a new live-action He-Man movie is set to be released in March 2021, it’ll be very difficult to match the ’80s superhero nostalgia and soundtrack of ‘Masters of the Universe.’ While it’s a movie that was made before its time, we should still be thankful that it was made when it was in 1987. It has a unique feel and cast that modern superhero movies just can’t match.

You can call it the differentiating (cosmic) key for ‘Masters of the Universe.’

Man, He was a Super Hero

The superheroes in a superhero movie aren’t always in front of the camera.

Masters of the Universe, released in 1987, is one of the best superhero movies ever made. This despite having to deal with many enormous challenges. The story follows He-Man and his solider friends as they to find and, in the process, prevent Skeletor and his army of villains from getting their hands on the all-powerful Cosmic Key as they search and destroy suburban Los Angeles. The movie is a perfect encapsulation of the cinematic magic of the ’80s that combined eye-catching practical effects and flashy CGI. As the expression goes, the film is pound-for-pound (or frame-for-frame) a classic that defines the eternal battle of good vs. evil.

And, as the short documentary below reveals, there was an epic battle just to make and finish this cult classic.

True story.

Courteney Cox undeniably stole the movie. The casting director should get another thank you, nearly 20 years later. Similar to Richard Donner’s Superman films with Christopher Reeve, critiques focusing on the slightly unrealistic visual effects are irrelevant. The technological challenges and related growing pains are, as a matter of fact, more endearing with each passing year and viewing. The story, characters and settings more than make up for any shortcomings.

Box office records and critical acclaim be damned: Masters of the Universe knew what it was and was proud of it.

That alone deserves a shout-out on “Throwback Thursday.”

He-Man still has the power!

The Key to Nostalgia

The following video clip justifies why “Throwback Thursday” exists.

Masters of the Universe features worlds from other dimensions, the epic battle of good vs. evil, exciting action and a cast that includes Dolph Lundgren (He-Man), Frank Langella (Skeletor) and the fresh-faced 23-year-old Courteney Cox (Julie Winston).

After helping shape the world of Asgard, “Thor” scribe Christopher Yost is now ready to head to Eternia to help He-Man return to the bigscreen.

Sony Pictures and Escape Artists have tapped Yost to do a rewrite on its reboot of “Masters of the Universe.”

The major motion picture Masters of the Universe (believe it or not) from the ’80s set a very high bar for the current reboot to reach towards.

It defined this story and characters for entire generations.

This is a treasured franchise and the movie did essentially everything right for the time it was written and produced. Its clever adaptation, perfect settings, optimistic innocence, danger in the form of shooting lasers and a floating throne and the casting of known and unknown actors and actresses are just a few reasons why this film is an important superhero classic.

As your blogging friend, I highly-recommend this movie from a past dimension/1987!
