RIP Stephen Hawking
The greatest living mind in the world universe of science has died.
Renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking died today at the incredible age of 76 in Cambridge, England. And his long life was incredible because he was not given much time to live following an unlikely diagnosis in his early 20s with a rare form of motor neurone disease. This restricted Mr. Hawking to a wheelchair and a devastating, paralyzing state. Despite these immense challenges, Professor Hawking was a towering figure in the scientific community, as well as in the world of pop-culture. Perhaps it was the latter that enlightened young minds who wouldn’t have come across the literary classic (for advanced minds) A Brief History of Time on their own volition to study and appreciate the profound work and insights of the man, who some have said, was the smartest person since Albert Einstein.
As someone who appreciates the visionary insights and contributions of Professor Hawking, what impresses me in equal measure was how he lived all these years with a tragic disease. The kind of pain he experienced is unimaginable. And yet, he lived with an inspiring spirit and an infinitely curious mind.
He also had a wonderful sense of humor.
Truly the greatest guest star in the history of The Big Bang Theory.
RIP Stephen Hawking.
RIP John Mahoney
Famed actor John Mahoney died this past Sunday at 77.
Best known for his role as Frasier Crane’s dad, Mr. Mahoney entertained TV and movie audiences with his affable personality for more than three decades. Celebrated for his extensive acting career, perhaps it’s best that most connect him with the Martin Crane character. Inside the fictional high-society world of Frasier, old Marty Crane was a relatable reality to viewers. And he did so with humor and goodness.
If you ask me, that’s a pretty great legacy.
Next time you’re drinking a beer (especially if you can find a Ballantine), raise a glass to Martin Crane John Mahoney.
Heartbreaking News
Jimmy’s Daily Planet is a big fan of Jimmy Fallon as host of The Tonight Show and from his days on SNL. Sadly, this post is not highlighting his comedic prowess, but one of sadness for the late-night comic.
As you’ve likely heard, Jimmy Fallon’s mom died. Heartbreaking news. He rightly took time off to try to deal with unimaginable pain. And returning last night to the famed desk of The Tonight Show, how was he going to address his personal tragedy after a week away from the show?
Along with Jimmy Fallon’s incredible talent as an entertainer, one of the reasons why he’s so favored is because, in many ways, he’s just like all of us. I don’t mean “he goes to pick up dry cleaning” just like us, but he seems more like of our funny older brother or buddy. Some late-night hosts just have that familial personality. Viewers across the country relate to his sense of humor, occasional shout-outs to his family on The Tonight Show and overall good-natured, goofy and positive attitude.

It can be hard to console a friend after someone close to them dies. What do you say? When do you say something? It’s difficult. However, the most important thing is to let your friend know you’re there for them. When the time is right, even a small gesture like Taylor’s heartfelt lyric can make a profound difference to someone experiencing a tragedy.
Tom Petty is Gone & We’re Heartbroken
Musical icon Tom Petty died last night after going into cardiac arrest at the age of 66.
Ignoring the non-political, real fake news concerning the premature announcement of Tom Petty’s death early yesterday (unreal), dedicated fans and casual listeners alike are mourning the amiable frontman. His impressive collection of tunes and unforgettable lyrics with the Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch and the Traveling Wilburys have already proven they are standing the test of time, evidenced during the past few decades.
Turn on a classic rock channel and try not to hear a Tom Petty song. Speaking of which…
“I’m learning to fly, but I ain’t got wings…”
