Flexing for the NFL
Will not tucking in one’s shirt become the style trend of 2016 in the business world?
Maybe in Dallas.
With the fourth pick in the NFL Draft in Chicago, Illinois, the Dallas Cowboys selected Ezekiel Elliott of The Ohio State University. Widely considered as the best running back in this year’s draft class (and one of the best overall athletes), Zeke not only showed flashes of his potential to succeed at the highest level, but he excelled in highlight reel after highlight reel for the Scarlet & Grey.
He’s a baller who will be a welcome addition by teammates, fans and Jerry Jones alike down in Dallas, Texas.
Mr. Elliott’s Buckeye pal Joey Bosa was drafted at No. 3 by the San Diego Chargers and Eli Apple was drafted at No. 10 by the New York Giants. Even as the First Round continues late into the night, the aforementioned picks collectively made for a special moment in the NFL Draft.
“…and it’s never happened before: Three players from the same school in the top ten picks of the draft. Ohio State has three of them now…”
–Chris Berman, ESPN
In the coming days, more history could be made by The Ohio State University. If “The Buckeye 14” becomes reality (14 players selected from one school), then, most importantly, smug Ohio State-hater Mark May will be receiving all kinds of fun, customized merchandise from Buckeye Nation.
Perhaps Mark May will receive another shout-out from Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer as he’s on the phone signing the future “Buckeye 15.”
Jimmy’s Daily Planet will stay tuned on the potential history for the Buckeyes in the 2016 NFL Draft.
It’s as Hard as 1-2-3
How do clubs like Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid consistently remain as a few of the top performing clubs in the world?
Where to begin: Players, coaches, tactics, history, stadiums/infrastructure, determination, experience, youth, money and passionate fan bases. These attributes certainly help in distinguishing the best soccer clubs from their league and continental challengers. However, the “it” factor for these players, it can be argued, is their rejection of the famed Allen Iverson Principle that slams showing up to practice and singularly promotes showing up for the game.
“…Not the game that I go out there and die for and play every game like it’s my last. Not the game, we talking ’bout practice, man. I mean, how silly is that? We’re talking about practice.”
–Allen Iverson
The timelessness of the old adage, “Practice makes perfect” reminds us that beginner’s luck runs out and that there is someone better out there. We must always remain dedicated and proactive with our craft and passions.
Certainly, Bayern Munich players know how to juggle a soccer ball. They’ll throw in tricks here and there for fun and for bragging rights among their teammates. Unsurprisingly, juggling a soccer ball between four players can present a bit of a challenge.
Now, add two more soccer balls into Route 1’s path and it becomes a worthy TV-interrupting zigzagging high-speed chase.
Soccer players, at the top of their game, burnishing their skill-set while preparing for the decisive Champions League quarterfinal match at Benfica illustrates the importance of practice. Plus, the Bayern Quattro on the pitch (Audi is a club sponsor) reveals the day-to-day mentality that helped the German giants defeat Benfica and qualify for the Champions League semifinal (opponent to be determined Friday morning). Each day is an opportunity to improve.
I’m talking about practice.
The same practice that leads to championships.
P.S. Of course Bayern Munich has a Biergarten at their practice facility. Add that to the list.
April Madness
What’s Cinderella in German?
Maybe it’s VfL Wolfsburg.
(The literal answer is Aschenputtel, as an FYI).
The reason for comparing the club that’s currently sitting quietly at 8th in the Bundesliga standings with the honor of the college basketball darling this time of year is based on the aforementioned team’s shocking performance against one of the top clubs (and brands) in the world. For context, VfL Wolfsburg’s opponent in the first leg of its Champions League quarterfinal match was Real Madrid. For greater context, Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 at the Nou Camp this past Saturday in El Clásico.
The game today was a classic, but not for the Spaniards…

2-nil is the worst lead in soccer, so when Real Madrid cannot even get one goal back against an admittedly lesser opponent, that’s a seismic statement and final result for the determined German club. VfL Wolfsburg not only held its own in front of their fans in the Volkswagen Arena, but the VW-branded team surprised the Spanish giants by playing in and excelling in 4th and 5th gears to open their quarterfinal home-and-away series in the 2016 Champions League.
Next Tuesday, in the return leg in Madrid, the world will discover if they need to learn more about what VfL Wolfsburg is and why Volkswagen’s comeback may not involve cars.
The Minions Experiment: Part II?
Columbus Crew SC owner Anthony Precourt’s Twitter:
“The colors Black & Gold also feel stale and dated after 21 years…#CrewSC”
This is the same person who approved (and possibly initiated) the mind-boggling “City of Columbus”/Minions kits with the light blue shorts and a jersey with strange looking yellow streaks down the middle. Mr. Precourt has certainly made some good decisions for the club. That’s a fact. But he also continues to make recent error after recent error. For starters, he didn’t appear to firmly stand up to LAFC for literally stealing the Crew’s signature (and MLS exclusive) Black & Gold color scheme. The Crew is even nicknamed, “The Black & Gold.”
Fans certainly had strong reactions to the new soccer kits for this season, which inspired a Jimmy Kimmel “Mean Tweets” video segment.
With that being said, there is one thing that’s for damn certain with his latest tweet!
He might finally understand the genuine backlash over whimsically changing the Crew’s beloved branding identity.
Well played, Mr. Precourt, well played.
That was a good April Fools’ joke, except for the fact that half of Crew Nation probably has just cause for suspecting he’s not altogether kidding. We’ll find a little more about whether he considers himself an owner of an MLS club or if he is indeed a convert to the history, spirit and embodiment of the Columbus Crew SC. How will he react when LAFC officially unveils its black and gold kits? When LAFC plays its first game at MAPFRE Stadium?
Until then, it’s okay to joke about this on April Fools’ via Twitter. However, it’s what he does after today that will reveal whether he’s a real favorite among fans. Mr. Precourt has done many good things for Crew Nation and Columbus, but it’s time he starts defending his (and our) Columbus Crew SC and its defining colors with the tenacity of Mike Clark or Todd Yeagley.
And like the old #3 and #6, fans would be just fine if Anthony Precourt earned a yellow card (so-to-speak) for unequivocally defending The Black & Gold.
